Unski Lađari is a Bosnian traditional tourist-sporting event and a race of traditional wooden boats held in Bosanska Krupa on the Una River, in the Una-Sana Canton, which began in 1977. The main part of the event is a race involving four-member crews in traditional Una boats, covering a course of approximately five kilometres from Crno jezero to the Wooden Bridge in central Bosanska Krupa.
History
Origins of the event
The origins of Unski Lađari are connected with the traditional way of life of the population of Bosanska Krupa along the Una River. The Una boat originally served as a practical river vessel for the transportation of people and goods, fishing and other everyday activities. Only later was the traditional vessel adapted for competitive racing.[1][2]
The beginnings of the event date back to the second half of the 1970s. The year 1976 is given as the year of the first event, while 1977 is often cited as the year in which the event was established. The name of Sabahudin Mahić is associated with its establishment, and he is regarded as its founder and first organiser.[3][2][4] In 2015, the 35th edition of Unski Lađari was attended by three participants who had taken part in the first Unski Lađari, held in 1977.[4]
Early period
In its early years, the event had a distinctly local character. Crews were often made up of members of the same family, neighbours or residents of particular parts of the town. The race therefore represented both a sporting competition and a form of local prestige associated with rowing skills and life on the Una River.[2][5]
War and post-war period
The war in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the post-war circumstances affected the continuity of the event. In the post-war period, the programme was expanded and, in addition to the traditional boat race, included various types of kayaking and other river competitions, as well as diving events from the Wooden Bridge.[6][4]
Race
Course
The main race in traditional Una boats is held downstream along the Una River, from the area of Crno jezero to the Wooden Bridge in the centre of Bosanska Krupa. The course is approximately 5.5 kilometres long.[7][8] In recent editions, a time trial is held before the main race to determine the starting positions of the crews.[9]
Crews
A traditional crew consists of four rowers. In earlier periods, teams were often formed on a family or neighbourhood basis, while later they increasingly developed as organised sporting teams.[3][5]
Una boat
Construction
The traditional Una boat is a wooden vessel specific to the area of Bosanska Krupa and the Una River. It developed from practical river vessels that were used for transportation and other needs of the local population.[2][10]
The construction is made from a combination of hard and soft types of wood, including oak, walnut, ash and elm for structural components, while fir, spruce and pine are used for the outer planking.[2][11]
Construction process
The traditional Una boat is built by hand. The process includes shaping the wooden framework, assembling and riveting the components, constructing the outer planking and protecting the vessel from water and weather conditions.[2][12] Several thousand nails are used to construct a single boat. The number depends on the dimensions and construction of the vessel, while sources describing different types of boats give figures ranging from approximately 6,000 to more than 10,000 nails.[2][11] The construction of a single Una boat requires approximately three to five days of work.[12][11]
Development of the design
Traditional boat designs changed over time. Older boats were also described as „sandučare“, primarily intended for the transportation of goods, while later models acquired a more rounded shape adapted to sporting purposes.[1] The development of the competition led to further adaptation of the boats to racing requirements, while their basic traditional construction was retained.[2]
Durability and maintenance
A properly maintained Una boat can last for several years, while exposure to sunlight, rain and other weather conditions accelerates the deterioration of the wood.[10]
Boat builders
Himzo Bužimkić
Himzo Bužimkić was one of the best-known builders of traditional Una boats. He began practising the craft as a young man, learning from older boat builders from Bosanska Krupa.[1][2]
His boats were built for various purposes and sailed outside Bosnia and Herzegovina as well. Among the known boats are Mura, Kupa, Thames, Ljubljana and Verona.[1][13]
Kenan Bužimkić
Kenan Bužimkić belongs to the Bužimkić family, which has been associated for generations with the construction and rowing of Una boats. He became familiar with the traditional boats during childhood, and first participated in the „Unski Lađari“ event in 2007, when he competed in the cadet category.[14][11] His workshop, „Kenwood“, produces traditional Una boats, while the team competing under the same name has achieved several victories at the event.[11]
Prva lasta Une
Prva lasta Une is a traditional diving event held from the Wooden Bridge in Bosanska Krupa as part of the Unski Lađari programme. The competition has become one of the event's best-known accompanying activities.[4]
The dives are performed using different techniques, with „lasta“ and „prelom“ among the recognised disciplines.[15]
