The untitled Community film is an upcoming comedy film written by Dan Harmon and Andrew Guest. It is a film continuation of the NBC/Yahoo! Screen television series Community (2009-2015). The film stars an ensemble cast featuring Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Jim Rash and Ken Jeong, who all reprise their respective roles from the original series. In addition to leading the cast, McHale will also executive produce alongside Harmon, Guest, Russ Krasnoff and Gary Foster.

Following the conclusion of the series' sixth and final season, multiple cast and crew members continued to express their interest in a film that continued the show's events, with series creator and head writer Dan Harmon exclaiming his intention to make a film featuring the original cast since 2016. The film's outline was completed by Harmon by August 2022, while the project itself was officially ordered by the streaming service Peacock the following month in addition to their acquisition of non-exclusive streaming rights to the series.

The film is set for release in 2023 on Peacock.

Development[edit]

Early development on a film continuing the events of the series began in 2014, with Sony Pictures Television producer Zack Van Amburg exclaiming that, "There's no way we're not making the movie now! I think once we make the movie, let's look up and decide how much more Community the world wants. I'd be lying if I told you that we have not had some very early and preliminary conversations that are very exciting about what a potential movie could be and who might direct it".[1] However, a year following the airing of the series' sixth and final season on the streaming service Yahoo! Screen, Harmon remained cautious towards the prospect of doing a movie immediately, feeling as if he couldn't start writing it until he missed the series for long enough, but concluded that "Yahoo can get it done. They're like the NSA".[2] Harmon would continually express his intention to make a movie featuring the original cast on multiple occasions, and confirmed during an interview with Time in July 2017, that he "recently had a conversation with a director that's the kind of guy whose weight in the industry could make that happen. For the first time in a long time, I'm actually putting thought into that again".[3] That November, Harmon expanded on his interview with Time, revealing that he had been working with director Justin Lin to realize the film. Lin previously directed the season one episodes "Introduction to Statistics", "Interpretive Dance" and "Modern Warfare".[4]

Throughout 2018, the series' main cast began to express their own enthusiasm for getting the film produced. Actor Danny Pudi, who portrayed Abed Nadir on the series, stated in January that the cast were still excited towards the prospects of reuniting for a film, exclaiming that "We have a little text chain, so we're always like, 'We're ready! We're ready!'"[5] In March, Joel McHale, who played Jeff Winger, mentioned that he still held out hope for the movie, and noted that bringing back former principal cast member Donald Glover would increase its chances at being successful. Glover had played the character Troy Barnes until leaving partway through season five to refocus on his rising music career.[6] McHale elaborated, "It would be great to do, I'd do it in a New York minute".[7] In June 2019, Brie expressed her thoughts on doing a film, adding that "Yeah, I think I would." She later added, "I mean, look, it's like, are we going to do the movie? I feel like if the Community movie ever gets made, it should just be made for Netflix, and it would be fun to do, but, I think it would be best if we could get everyone to do it, so I feel like that might be difficult."[8]. The following February during an "Ask Me Anything" session on Reddit, Brie updated her stance on returning for a film, stating that she "actually got an interesting call about it this week" when questioned about a Community movie and asked fans to "stay tuned" regarding its progress.[9]
