An untitled Fallout video game is an upcoming action role-playing game developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Bethesda Softworks. It will be a spin-off title in the Fallout series.

Obsidian Entertainment, a first-party developer for Xbox Game Studios who previously produced Fallout: New Vegas (2010), was placed in charge of a new project within the franchise in 2026, as part of Xbox's reorientation of their publishing division towards higher-profile properties such as Fallout, which they acquired alongside the rest of Bethesda and ZeniMax Media's portfolio in 2021. Josh Sawyer reprises his role as game director and designer after previously leading New Vegas.

Development

In 2021, Microsoft acquired ZeniMax Media, the parent company of publisher Bethesda Softworks for $7.5 billion USD, transitioning them into a first-party subsidiary for their Xbox gaming division and absorbing the rights to Bethesda's various franchises, including Fallout, which it previously acquired from Interplay Entertainment in 2004.[1][2] Microsoft's prior acquisition of developer Obsidian Entertainment, which was folded into Xbox Game Studios in 2018, sparked fan and critical speculation that the division now posessed the necessary means to produce a successor to Fallout: New Vegas (2010), which Obsidian previously conceived as an independent studio.[3][4] During an interview celebrating the franchise's 25th anniversary in 2022, Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart, who was formerly affiliated at Interplay and designed Fallout 2 (1998), stated his aspirations to produce a new Fallout title, but claimed that the studio's priorities on projects such as Grounded (2022), Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2 (both 2025), in addition to observing Bethesda's desires to partner with them, made the prospects of such a game more difficult at the time.[5]

In July 2026, Obsidian Entertainment was reported to have lost 25% of their then-current workforce as part of Xbox's wider restructuring period following their prior fiscal year. By then, the studio was reported to have been shifted away from producing a planned sequel to Avowed in favor of a new Fallout title, aligning with the broader Xbox division's goals of accelerating the release cadence of their tentpole franchises.[6][7] New Vegas director and designer Josh Sawyer was also reported to be helming the project after being pulled away from leading a conceptually similar original RPG set outside the Fallout franchise.[8]
