Development[edit]

Shortly after the death of David Bowie, Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews originally pitched to The Jim Henson Company an idea for a sequel to the 1986 film Labyrinth, which starred Bowie.[1] However, Lisa Henson instead suggested them to work on the TV series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, which they agreed working on.[1] Later, Fede Alvarez, a fan of Labyrinth, and Jay Basu presented their own idea for a sequel to The Jim Henson Company, which was approved for development.[2]

On January 22, 2016, it was reported that TriStar Pictures was developing a reboot of Labyrinth, with Nicole Perlman set to write the script, while Lisa Henson and Nicole Brown are set to produce the film.[3] In April 2017, it was reported that Fede Álvarez will direct the film, with Álvarez and Jay Basu set to rewrite the script.[4] In October 2018, Álvarez confirmed the movie is a sequel and that he has already wrote the screenplay.[5] On November 3, 2019, Álvarez revealed that he and Basu are currently working on a second version of the screenplay, and said that "[they will] keep writing until [they] believe that it's a perfect script", as the original film "has such a beloved fanbase".[2] He also said that the film's development "will take some time", stating that the project "[is] not something that [can be rushed]".[2] On May 26, 2020, Scott Derrickson replaced Álvarez as director and will produce with C. Robert Cargill from a script by Maggie Levin.[6]
