The untitled Man of Steel sequel is an American superhero film based on DC Comics featuring the character Superman. Produced by DC Films and Atlas Entertainment, and distribuited by Warner Bros. Pictures, the film is intended to be a sequel to Man of Steel (2013), and a part of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The film will be produced by Charles Roven, and is intended to star Henry Cavill as Kal-El / Clark Kent / Superman.

Development on a Man of Steel sequel began by October 2014, but Warner Bros.' plans for the character changed after the troubled production of Justice League (2017). This resulted in the sequel languishing in development hell and being ultimately discarded by 2021 in favor of a reboot centering on an African-American version of the character. The Man of Steel sequel re-entered development in October 2022, with Roven and Cavill attached.

Development[edit]

Initial work[edit]

In October 2014, Warner Bros. Pictures announced that a sequel to the film Man of Steel (2013) was in development, as part of the then-conceived DC Extended Universe (DCEU). Henry Cavill was set to return as Superman.[2] Despite turning a profit, however, Man of Steel failed to reach Warner Bros.' financial, expectations, after which the studio choose to focus on the crossover film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice as the second DCEU film. Director Zack Snyder said he planned for Brainiac and the Kryptonians within the Phantom Zone were being considered as villains before the studio prioritized Batman v. Superman.

In November 2016, Man of Steel star Amy Adams revealed the script for a seqyel was already in development.[3] Matthew Vaughn entered talks to helm the film by March 2017, being the studio's top choice to direct the project.[4]
