Urban Spree is a space for arts and culture at RAW in Berlin-Friedrichshain. A wide range of on-site events features exhibitions, artists in residence and DIY-Workshops devoted to urban culture. The 1700 sq m space also comprises an art store and a beer garden.
History
Urban Spree was founded by Frenchmen Pascal Feucher and Nicolas Defawe, both born in 1970, and officially opened its doors on June 21st in 2012.[1] Before that, Pascal Feucher had been the executive director of the private equity department at the private bank Sal. Oppenheim in Paris. Amongst other things, Nicolas Defawe had been co-founder of Berlin night club HBC on Karl-Liebknecht-Straße.[2] The location of what is now Urban Spree used to be an underground techno club but had been standing empty for several years.[3]
Gallery
The Urban Spree Gallery curates monthly exhibitions that often also involve the outside area. A special eye-catcher is the so called Artist Wall, a 15m long and 8m high front facade facing Warschauer Straße, one of the most important arterial roads of Berlin. Amongst many others, artists such as Above, Klone, Zevs, Broken Fingaz Crew, Twoone, Low Bros, Nychos, 1UP Crew, The Grifters, Peachbeach, Rylsee, m-city, Johannes Mundinger have painted it in the past.[4]
Artists in Residence
An important part of Urban Spree's infrastructure are the artists in residence. There are permanent and temporary studios as well as guest residencies, set up to support the artists and thereby contributing directly to art being created at and around Urban Spree. In return, the artists commit to designing and shaping the area and hold workshops that invite Urban Spree's visitors to get creative themselves, for example in sign painting workshops.[5] These artists are currently in long-term residence: Andrea Wan, Rylsee, Tavar Zawacki/Above, Johannes Mundinger, Tine Fetz und Billy. Urban Spree is also home to Dolly Demoratti's screen print studio "Mother Drucker".[6]
Besides the artists in residence the Urban Spree Art Residency also takes place in irregular intervals. Here, all visitors of Urban Spree are invited to take an intimate look at the artist's creative process and thereby become part of the end result. The Urban Spree Art Residency finishes with an exhibition opening, softening the borders between public and private, inside and outside.[7]
Beer Garden
The outside area of Urban Spree is used as a beer garden mainly in the warmer months of the year but also during festivals and special events. Besides selling regional and national craft beers and soft drinks, street food containers and various food stalls serve selected international specialities to the visitors. Throughout the summer, the Urban Spree Summer Sessions take place every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night and present acoustic live gigs of local musicians. The tattoo parlour Amor de Madre is also based in the beer garden area.
Art Store
The Urban Spree book shop is located inside the gallery. It offers a selection of titles about graffiti, street art and photography, all connected by offering a vision on cities and post-industrial, abandoned spaces.[8] The integrated art store offers a wide range of screen prints by local and international artists who work together with Urban Spree temporarily or permanently. There are also t-shirts available, designed and screen printed on site. In 2016, Urban Spree founded a publishing house in order to push towards own publications.[9]
In May 2017 the "Smallest Record Store in the World" became part of the Urban Spree art store. It mainly offers vinyls by bands that have played Urban Spree and is curated by different local record labels and promoters.[10]
Other
Urban Spree hosts a variety of festivals, such as Pictoplasma Festival, Krake Festival, ComicInvasionBerlin, Berlin Seafood Festival, Amaze Berlin, Midsommar Festival, Druck Berlin Festival or Berlin Graphic Days. Furthermore, occasional film screenings, dinner events, food festivals and markets take place.[11] [12]
For its three year anniversary in December 2015, Urban Spree launched the vegan hot beverage "Winterspree" in cooperation with beverage manufacturer Ostmost. The Berlin manufacturer Ostmost produces juices, soft drinks and cider with apples from regional fruit trees.[13] Winterspree is made of organic apple juice, organic vodka and wintry spices. The nine individual labels were designed by various artists.[14]
