URUBIT Group (URUBIT) is a Web3 ecosystem consisting of a deflationary cryptocurrency ($URUB) and suite of decentralized finance (DeFi) tools and services, founded in April 2021 by two sixteen-year-olds from Uruguay, Santino Veiga, and Facundo Rodríguez.[3]

According to Urubit’s smart contract[4] and its whitepaper[5] , the token tokenomics include passive rewards in $URUB distributed automatically and proportionately to current holders each time a transaction occurs and an automatic deflationary system which burns tokens, meaning they disappear, each time a transaction is made. The URUBit token can also be used to make purchases from participating merchants. Additional features and products are currently under development.

History

URUBit, dubbed the “Uruguayan Bitcoin”, was created in Punta del Este, Uruguay by a game-developer and founder of CodahGames, Santino Veiga and an entrepreneur, Facundo Rodríguez[6][7]. Urubit is supported by national funding[8] and InBierto[9], a member of the Uruguayan Chamber of Fintech (Cámara Uruguaya de Fintech). Today, Urubit’s tools and services include U-Wallet, a crypto-enabled wallet for Android devices (currently under development for iOS), U-Teller, a standalone physical crypto automated teller machine (ATM) that supports the withdrawal and deposit of Bitcoin, Binance Coin, Binance USD, Ferret Token and URUBit[10], and U-Lottery, a daily lottery game to win $URUB.

The initial coin offering of the $URUB token occurred on DxSale on 23 May 2021 at a price of $0.000149 USD per token. The token was released on 27 May 2021 on the Binance Smart Chain via PancakeSwap, a decentralized exchange (DEX). URUBIT ($URUB) is currently traded on the following exchanges: PancakeSwap, MiCrypto, and HeavenEx.

In November and December 2021, Urubit Group announced the additions of Tomás Gonzalez, as Chief Legal Officer, Renzo Battaglia as Chief Growth Officer, and Giuliano Bardecio as Chief Information Officer.

In the media

URUBIT maintains a YouTube channel that features updates and educational material[11], and it is also active on Telegram, Discord, and Twitter.

News about URUBIT and its founders have been well-documented by several media outlets. The articles have chronicled the project and founders’ story and situated Urubit within the broader context of fiscal history and policy in Latin America. The first story appeared in Montevideo Portal[3] on 3 July 2021 about URUBIT Group’s young founding team[3], followed by a story in Clarín that covered the unveiling and launch of the U-Teller in Punta del Este[12]. Urubit was featured in Yahoo! Finance[13], and BeinCrypto[14] on December 9, 2021, confirming the location and launch of U-Teller in “Smart Point”, in Gorlero Street near Urubit and InBierto offices. On January 5, 2022, Forbes profiled Ferret, a crypto project developed by Urubit partners InBierto, referencing the launch of Urubit’s U-Teller, and discussed the state of digital asset policy and the rate of cryptocurrency adoption across Uruguay[15]. An article in El Pais[16], Infobae[17], Cointelegraph[18] and Investing.com on 10 January 2022 confirmed that U-Teller is “100% manufactured in Uruguay” and reported additional details on the parties behind its joint development.
