Usagi Shima is a 2023 indie ??? developed and published by Jess Yu. The game is based off of Ōkunoshima, with the gameplay having the player transform an island into a Bunny Paradise.
Gameplay
Set on an abandoned island, the player helps Dango, the travelling salesbun, to set up a store on the island. The player buys items and buildings from the store to decorate the island, which attracts rabbits to visit the island.
The player can buy more island space via the use of the premium in-game currency, Gold Carrots, or via the Island Expansion in-app purchase. Buying the Beach Expansion gives more land space, unlocks more items to be available in the shop, and a Special Bunny called Dotty. Buying the Ocean Expansion allows players to place specific items in the Ocean.
There is no end game and bunnies will continue to come as long as there's space to spawn on the island.
The game is free to play, though additional Carrots are available for purchase.
Bunnies
As of version 1.5.15,[update] there are 35 bunnies for the player to collect. Among these, 13 are considered to be "special bunnies" and only start to appear on the island when certain items are placed on the island or achievements are met. Each bunny has a unique name, personality, and appearance (e.g. Yuzu who is based on the Yuzu fruit). The player cannot rename the bunnies.
Development
Usagi Shima started development in February 2021, and was released in September 2023. The developer of the game, Jess Yu, created the game due to the lack of games that included or were about rabbits, and wanted to have a Neko Atsume-like game where the cats could be interacted with.
Release
On September 1st 2023, the game was released on the Android and iOS app stores.
