History

John Orr Young and Raymond Rubicam founded Young & Rubicam in 1923. Young & Rubicam changed the advertising industry by implementing new print, radio, and television strategies. Young & Rubicam was the first to be an agency of record for a global company – Colgate Palmolive. In 2000, Y&R was acquired by the WPP Group, a London-based marketing communications holding company.

VML was founded in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1992 by John Valentine, Scott McCormick, and Craig Ligibel. WPP bought VML in 2002 and folded it into the Y&R network in 2009.

In 2018, WPP merged VML and Y&R, producing VMLY&R. Notable global clients include Ford, Colgate-Palmolive, Wendy's, Pfizer, Dell, the U.S. Census, Danone, Sherwin Williams, and the U.S. Navy.

Notable Work

In 2019, VMLY&R Kansas City combined social media and gaming to produce the Wendy’s 'Keeping Fortnite Fresh' campaign. At the Cannes Festival of Creativity, the campaign won the Inaugural Social and Influencer Grand Prix and the first Grand Prix ever for VMLY&R.

VMLY&R Poland collaborated with three other companies to create "The Last Ever Issue" – a campaign that culminated with the dismantling of a sexist porn magazine in Poland. This campaign won the Glass Lion for Change Grand Prix and a Titanium Lion at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity in 2019, Gold at the Epica Awards in 2020 and a Grandy at the Andys in 2020.

In 2019, the Cannes Festival of Creativity awarded three VMLY&R offices with number one rankings: Agency of the Year by Country, Germany to Scholz & Friends, and Agency of the Year by Track to VMLY&R Poland and VMLY&R Kansas City. The company was recognized by AdAge on the Agency A-list Agency to Watch in 2019 and 2020 and in the Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for Global Marketing Agencies report in 2019 and 2020.

Growth and Acquisitions

In October 2018, WPP rolled Sudler & Hennessey US into VMLY&R during a WPP integration of health brands.

In 2019, VMLY&R announced its EMEA executive leadership team with Andrew Dimitriou appointed as chief executive officer of EMEA. This move was coupled with organizational expansion in the EMEA region through the creation of the following Centres of Excellence (CoE): customer experience, technology, and content.

In 2020, VMLY&R created an alliance with Scholz & Friends Group, which employs nearly 1,000 employees in four locations, including Hamburg, Berlin, Düsseldorf, and Zurich.
