Vadim Werbitzky (Russian: Вадим Викторович Вербицкий Vadim Viktorowitsch Verbizki; born 29 May 1961 in Munich) is a German and Russian composer.

Biography[edit]

Vadim Werbitzky was born in Munich in 1961. He received his first music lessons at the age of seven, firstly in piano and later in organ. Werbitzky wrote his first compositions at the age of thirteen. From 1982 to 1992, after completing his high school studies, he studied at the faculties of mathematics, informatics, theology and philosophy at the Bavarian Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and the Technical University of Munich. In parallel, he continued his autodidactic studies in composition.

The turning point in the composer's creative life was his acquaintance with Edison Denisov, who invited him to his class in Paris, the Schola Cantorum de Paris. Another important milestone in his evolution as a composer was the encounter with the musicologist and composer Alexander Rovenko. Despite the vividly contemporary musical language of Werbitzky, the influences of the old masters of polyphony, the early church monody, various folk music traditions as well as Indonesian Gamelan remain palpable.

Music[edit]

The work of Vadim Werbitzky includes compositions for solo instruments, duets, trios, quartets, quintets, sextets, for concertante performing large ensembles, hymns, madrigals, cantatas with soloists and chorus, orchestral works as well as transcriptions.
