Vahid Garousi (born 1978) is an Iranian-Canadian software engineer, academic and Associate Professor of Software Engineering at Wageningen University, known for his contributions in the fields of software engineering, software testing, test automation.[1] and improving industry-academia collaborations in software engineering[2].

Biography[edit]

Born in Mianeh, Iran, in 1978, Garousi is of Azerbaijani ethnicity and is originally an Iranian-Azerbaijani. He lived and grew up in Mianeh and Tabriz, two cities in the Iranian Azerbaijan province, until 1996.

Education[edit]

In year 1996, Vahid entered Sharif University of Technology in Tehran and received his BSc in Software Engineering in 2000[3]. In year 2001, he immigrated to Canada and continued his graduate studies there. He received his MSc in 2003 in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Waterloo, and received his PhD in Software Engineering from the Carleton University in 2006. His PhD thesis title was: Traffic-aware stress testing of distributed real-time systems based on UML models using genetic algorithms[4].

Career[edit]

During years 1998-2006, and while studying, he worked as a part-time software engineer and a consultant for several software companies and clients in Iran and Canada, and was involved in the development of several software systems in various domains, e.g., a large-scale supply chain management system based on the Oracle Database while working for a Canadian company named Corsha, and a web-based application for managing academic-job application for universities (a project for the University of Waterloo).

After receiving his PhD in 2006, Vahid started his academic career as an Assistant Professor of Software Engineering in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. In year 2010, he was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor with tenure. In the University of Calgary, he founded and led the Software Quality Engineering Research Group (SoftQual). During his career in Canada, he regularly collaborated with software companies on several software engineering research projects and helped companies develop higher-quality software systems in an efficient and effective manner. Some of his collaborator companies in Canada include: Pason Systems Inc.[5], NovAtel Inc.[6], and IBM Corporate Research [7].

In 2013, he moved from Canada to Turkey and continued his academic career in Middle East Technical University (METU) and Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey until 2017. In Hacettepe University, he founded and led the Hacettepe University Software Engineering Research Group (HUSE). During his career in Turkey, he continued collaborating with the software industry on various software engineering research projects and helped companies develop higher-quality software systems in an efficient and effective manner. Some of his collaborator companies in Turkey include: HAVELSAN A.Ş.[8], and Innova A.Ş.[9]

After working in Turkey for about four years, he moved to the Netherlands in 2017 and is now continuing his academic career in Wageningen University.

Research areas and expertise[edit]

Vahid has a broad interest in software engineering. He specializes in software testing and empirical software engineering. In software testing in specific, his expertise areas include: test automation[10], software test maturity, and test process improvement[11]. He regularly applies the principles of action research in his projects and conducts most of this projects in close collaboration with the software industry[12][13].[14]
