Val Garland is a British Make up Artist[1] and TV personality.[2] Garland is the Global Make Up Director for L’Oréal Paris [3], contributing Beauty Editor to British Vogue, Head Judge of BBC/Netflix’s ‘Glow Up: Britain's Next Make-Up Star,’ and author of Validated: The make up of Val Garland[4]
Early life and education[edit]
Garland grew up in the English city of Bristol. As a teenager she began work as a hairdresser in Bristol, later moving to Sydney, Australia[5] to start her salon Garland and Garland, moving away from seminars and shows into session work led her to doing both hair and make-up, once she returned to London, Garland became solely a make-up artist [6].
Career[edit]
Val Garland's work encompasses catwalk, celebrity, music, advertising and editorial[7][8][9] Garland served as the primary makeup artist for Lady Gaga 'Born This Way' era, including the album cover as well as the music video for the title track[10], Garland is responsible for Gaga's notable "bones" prosthetics.
Garland is seen as the pioneer of the "just-snogged" lipstick trend, first showcased at London Fashion Week in Fall 2017.[11]. In the same year Garland was named the Global Make-up Director for L'Oréal Paris her role encompassing product innovation to creating looks for L’Oreal Ambassadors, the annual L’Oreal Paris Defile and Red Carpet Makeup for the Cannes Film Festival [12]
Garland held a retrospective conversation to discuss the stories and inspiration behind her most memorable work with Sarah Mower at The Lydia & Manfred Gorvy Lecture Theatre, Victoria and Albert Museum in October 2018 .[13]
Awards[edit]
Garland was awarded in 2004 the Pantene Pro-V Make-up Artist of the Year Award [14] and became the recipient to National Reality TV Award Best Judge in 2019 and 2022. [15]
