Valores James Washington (September 18, 1903 – April 23, 1995)[1] was an African American Republican organizer and journalist. He served as business manager for The Chicago Defender from 1935 to 1941. From 1949, he served as director of minorities before retiring in 1961.

Early life and career

On September 18, 1903, Washington was born in Columbus, Indiana[2] to James and Ella Washington. He graduated from Indiana University in 1924.

Political career

In 1946, Washington was a member of the Republican National Committee and was an assistant campaign manager to Herbert Brownell. He served as director of minorities in the Republican Party and was tasked with helping African-American voters return to the GOP.

Work under President Eisenhower

During the Eisenhower administration, Washington played a prominent role within the party. He was an advisor to President Eisenhower, and he urged Republican politicians to appoint more African-Americans.

Later life

Washington left the Republican National Committee in 1961 following the defeat of the Nixon ticket in the 1960 presidential election. After his resignation, he established a firm.

Personal life

Washington married Sarah Tyler Washington.

He died of a heart attack on April 23, 1995 and is buried at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.[3]
