Validus Capital is a Singapore-headquartered peer-to-business lending platform focusing on small and medium enterprise (SME) financing..[1][2][3] Validus Capital enables accredited and institutional investors to finance SMEs through the provision of loans. It currently operates in Singapore with plans to expand its operations across Southeast Asia, commencing with Indonesia.[4]

History[edit]

Validus Capital was founded by Vikas Nahata in 2015, and was joined by Ajit Raikar and Nikhilesh Goel shortly afterin 2015.[5][6] Nahata is an alumnus of Wharton Business School, University of Pennsylvania. He previously co-founded four startups and is currently Co-Chair of Singapore Fintech Association's Marketplace Lending Committee.[7][8] Raikar is a banker by profession and was previously the head of SME Banking at DBS Bank, the largest bank in Southeast Asia by assets.[9] Raikar was also instrumental in setting up the SME banking division at Citi, a model which was replicated throughout the world.[7] Goel is a corporate finance and private equity professional. He also founded a boutique mergers and acquisitions (M&A) practice and previously led the M&A team at Masan Group.[7]

Since its inception, Validus Capital has raised US$3.6 million from its Series A funding in 2017, led by Temasek Holdings' subsidiary Vertex Ventures. Vertex Ventures invested US$3 million into the company while angel investors funded the remainder.[3][4][10]

The company received its Capital Markets Services License from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) in December 2017.[11]

In August 2018, the company announced its investors provided over 1,400 loans to Singaporean SMEs across different industries. As of December 2018, it has facilitated over US$83.5 million in business financing through its platform.[2][12]

Partnerships[edit]

Validus Capital has established several partnerships with financial institutions and technology organisations, including Visa[13], National University of Singapore's Risk Management Institute, Credit Research Initiative (CRI) (NUS RMI-CRI), Lighthouse Canton Group and EQ Insurance.[14][15]

Validus Capital launched a S$20 million LCV Trade Finance Fund together with Lighthouse Canton Group to further facilitate financing of SMEs in Singapore. It reportedly plans to scale the fund to a size of S$200 million by 2020.[15]

The company has also partnered with EQ Insurance to provide insurance coverage to protect investors in the event businesses default on their loans facilitated by Validus Capital.[16][17]

In 2018, Validus Capital partnered with Visa to offer virtual corporate credit cards to assist SMEs in settling their outstanding invoices and to facilitate reinvestment.[13][18]

Awards[edit]

  • ASEAN Rice Bowl Awards 2018 - Startup Of The Year (Singapore)[19]
  • Finalist in MAS Fintech Awards 2016[20]

Platform[edit]

The Validus platform uses a credit rating algorithm jointly developed with NUS RMI-CRI, which forms part of the suite of technology comprising artificial intelligence and machine learning to assess the credit rating of business borrowers and to determine loan's interest rate.[1] Loan requests are usually processed and approved within 24 hours.[21]
