Valie Export

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

VALIE EXPORT is a well known female artist who freely expresses her work politically, and she gets the public eye to see how societies standards perceive women and their bodies. Export to this day has remained to be known as one of the most influential feminist artists in history. Valie Export's work made her successful because she was making it a point to show the world what experiences the female body encounters. Export wanted to make a stand for females and how their bodies are displayed, or used, compared to the male bodies.[1] When Valie Export was growing up she always thought it wasn't fair that men got to do so much more than females were able to do growing up. Being aware of this issue growing up Export knew there were social injustices around her and was was very aware that a major problem in the world around her was gender inequality. [1] The body was seen to be a way of artistic material to Valie Export. Valie Export would use her own private parts in some of her artwork by allowing her breasts to be seen, or touched by the public. Export caused a lot of controversy over a piece of art where she exposed her genitals to the public. Export used a lot of performance and film in her works to depict how women's bodies may have been shown on-screen compared to what the reality of women's bodies were like off-screen. [1]

In one of Valie Export's pieces she rolled over broken glass completely naked. The piece where she rolled over glass was called, "Erosion." This piece was about Export expressing how she wanted her body to be seen. Export wanted to show the males a way females bodies weren't typically seen, and therefore that is what made her piece work because she was making the male eye see her in a way they weren't typically used too. This piece, "Erosion," became a semiotic and feminist way to use her body.[2]
