Vance (Wanen in Luxembourgish & German) is a submunicipality of the Belgian commune of Étalle, located in the Walloon region of the province of Luxembourg.
Geography[edit]
Vance is located seven miles west of Arlon, on National Highway 83 Arlon-Bouillon.
History[edit]
On May 10, 1940, during World War II, the German infantry seized Vance as part of an 18-day campaign, which led to clashes with the 2nd Calvary of France. A French AMR 33 armored car and two German Panzer II tanks (likely from the 10th Panzer Division) were destroyed as part of this conflict.
Famous People from Vance[edit]
Belgian professor of history Henri Dabfontaine-Deum (1820–1876) was born in Vance in 1820.
Emigration[edit]
During the 19th century, several villagers of Vance immigrated to the United States, settling in such places as Big Spring Township, Seneca County, Ohio. Many of the Didrich, Fagny, Ponce and Sosson families of the United States trace back to these immigrants from Vance.
