Variable fixation locking screw

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Variable Fixation Locking Screw (VFLS) is a type of orthopaedic implant designed to be used with locking plates [1] for the fixation of certain types of long bone fractures. The gradual degradation of its resorbable sleeve allows a controlled increase in construct flexibility [2] during fracture healing time.

It is the first orthopaedic implant able to naturally and gradually vary the fracture stability conditions without the need of a further surgical intervention.

The idea behind Variable Fixation Locking Screw is to provide a controlled and progressive mechanical stimulation of the tissue forming in the fracture gap [3]. Since the bone cells respond to such mechanical stimulation, the secondary healing process [4] is fostered, resulting in a higher chance to robustly bridge the fracture gap.
