"Variety 100"(綜藝100) has undergone several changes in its production team during its five-year broadcast. After broadcasting 78 episodes, the show's planner, Huang Zhao-yan (黃昭彥), departed to manage two other variety shows, "Star Bright" (星光閃閃) and "Weekend 2100," (週末2100) on CTS. When the show reached its 118th episode, the veteran producer Jiang Ji-xiong (江吉雄) resigned due to disagreements with CTS. Following this, "Variety 100" continued for six episodes without a producer until Zhang Xiao-yan led the Weixin Broadcasting (威星傳播) production team to take over and maintained their cooperation with advertising agency Nanxing Broadcasting(南星傳播). In early 1982, Wu Zhi-jing (吳之敬) [1] from Weixin Broadcasting became the new producer of "Variety 100." [2] It is worth noting that Wu Zhi-jing is the uncle of Yu Jia-hui (-{于}-佳卉).[3] In March 1982, the show aired its 100th episode, produced by Jiang Shao-cheng. "Variety 100" is a popular Chinese variety show that debuted in 1979. The program features a diverse range of segments, including "Hot Topics" (熱門話題), "100 Albums" (100專輯), "Interstellar News" (星際新聞), "Pillow talk" (枕邊細語), "Non-Advertisement" (非廣告), "Back Window Talk" (後窗妙談), "Star of the Week" (每週一星), "Foreign Celebrity Performances" (國外藝人表演), "360 Degrees of Troubles" (360度的煩惱), "Ideas" (點子), "Songs and Dances" (歌聲舞影), "You and I" (你儂我儂), and "Top Selling Pop Songs" (流行歌曲暢銷排行榜) among others. While some segments, such as "Non-Advertisement" (非廣告) and "Interstellar News," (星際新聞) remained constant, the majority were rotated frequently to keep the content fresh and engaging for the audience. To differentiate itself from other variety shows of the time, "Variety 100" incorporated a large number of short plays and fresh segments interspersed with singing performances. The show quickly became a ratings success. At the conclusion of each episode, the host, Chang Hsiao-yen, would sing "The Goodbye Song" (再見歌) in her signature out-of-tune voice.[4]
"Variety 100" took a bold approach by featuring a substantial number of new actors, nicknamed the "treasure group"(寶貝群) in its program, a move that carries inherent risks. Surprisingly, each segment became popular due to the talent of these new actors. Notably, "Variety 100" launched the careers of several now-prominent actors, including Liu Fangying (劉芳英), Li Guo-xiu (李國修), Lin Guang-ning (林光寧), Ma Shi-li (馬世莉), Zhang Shun-xing (張順興), Gu Bao-ming (顧寶明), Li Li-qun (李立群), Qin Fei-fei (秦菲菲), and Lu Yi-long (陸一龍), who have all made significant contributions to the entertainment industry.
After five years on air, "Variety 100" began to show signs of fatigue, and its broadcaster, CTS, received a warning notice from Ou Di Wei Records (歐帝威唱片), a record company founded by Liu Jia-chang (劉家昌). These factors, among others, led to the airing of the show's final episode on October 21, 1984. CTS planned to replace the time slot with television specials featuring singers such as Su Rui (蘇芮), Sun Hao (孫豪), and Cao Xi-ping (曹西平).[5] The final episode of "Variety 100" was recorded on October 19, 1984, and attended by Jiang Ji-xiong (江吉雄), Huang Zhao-yan (黃昭彥), Wu Zhi-jing (吳之敬), and the first generation "treasure group" Fang Fang (方芳), who presented the first variety show notice to singers who had appeared on the program, including Pan Yue-yun (潘越雲), Yang Li-su (楊黎蘇), Cao Xi-ping (曹西平), Jiang Yu-heng (姜育恆), Huang Zhong-kun (黃仲崑), and others. Jiang Guang-chao (蔣光超), the special guest of the first episode, also made a brief appearance. During the singing of the "Goodbye Song" by the last "treasure group" Lin Guang-ning (林光寧) and Hu Gua (胡瓜), they referenced General Douglas MacArthur's famous quote, "We shall return."[6]
During an interview with "CommonWealth Magazine"(天下雜誌) in February 2002, Chang Hsiao-yen discussed her time working on "Variety 100." :
“While working on 'Variety 100', I took it upon myself to oversee the editing and arrangement, working tirelessly until dawn every week. Despite directing the show and pushing for the scripts, I wasn't credited as a producer nor did I ask for any extra compensation. I simply immersed myself in the work and persevered, and this dedication is what ultimately led me to TVBS-G”[7]
On October 31, 2010, Chinese Television System commemorated its 39th anniversary at the first studio, where Chang Hsiao-yen(張小燕) and Zhan Sen-xiong(詹森雄) performed a nostalgic duet of the "Goodbye Song," bringing back memories of the beloved program "Variety 100."[8]
On September 14, 2015, Chang Hsiao-yen provided an analysis stating that "Variety 100" served as a popular benchmark during its time and was often the first platform for many singers, including Tsai Chin (蔡琴) . The show featured short skits that were combined with current events, daily life, and family topics. The day following each episode's airing, students and office workers alike would engage in discussions about which songs made the charts and which skits were the funniest, underscoring the show's widespread popularity.[9]
In February 2022, the administrator of the "China Television Nostalgia Channel" on YouTube announced that the copyright to "Variety 100" no longer belongs to China Television System.
Unit Introduction
- <Interstellar News> (星際新聞)
- Chang Hsiao-yen portrayed the character "Yi Baila" (易百拉) [4] in the short skit segment of "Variety 100". The character originated from the entertainment news segment "Holiday News" (歡樂假期) hosted by Tian Lulu (田路路) on the China Television Company variety show "Happy Holidays" (歡樂假期) . Yi Baila's signature opening line was "Dala li dala, I am Yi Baila", with the melody taken from the notes played during the communication with aliens in the Hollywood movie "Close Encounters of the Third Kind"
- <The Non-Advertisement> (非廣告)
- "The Non-Advertisement" is a satirical sketch that mocks television commercials. At the start of each episode, a cast member brings a sign reading "non-advertisement" to the center of the stage from the right side and delivers the three words in various tones.
- <Songwriting chart> (創作歌謠排行榜)
- The” Top Selling Pop Songs" was a music chart jointly organized by "Variety 100" and "Min Sheng Daily"(民生報) from July 1980 to March 1982. The chart's methodology involved a weekly voting process, where readers selected 20 candidate songs published in "Min Sheng Daily". To vote, readers cut out voting slips and pasted them onto postcards, which were then sent to the "Variety 100 Production Center." The rankings were determined by the total number of votes each week, with a total of 86 rankings released during the chart's run. Additionally, readers could suggest songs for consideration in the following week's candidate list. Li Jian-fu (李建復)'s "Descendants of the Dragon" (龍的傳人) held the first position for the first 14 weeks, while Tsai Chin (蔡琴)'s "Just Like Your Tenderness" (恰似你的溫柔) placed second during the first week.
- <Top Mandarin Songs> (國語歌曲排行榜)
- From August 1982 to March 1983, "Variety 100" and "Minsheng Daily" co-hosted a popular song chart that was published for a total of 73 weeks. This chart followed the "Songwriting Chart" picking up from the 87th to the 159th week. The voting process was the same as the "Songwriting Chart", but the number of candidate songs increased to 39. To determine the ranking order, the chart compiled the voting results with approximate shipment data provided by record distributors and stores in northern, central, and southern Taiwan.
- <Pop Songs Bestsellers Gold Chart> (流行歌曲暢銷排行金榜)
- The “Top Selling Pop Songs" was launched in August 1983 and continued until October 1984, co-organized by "Variety 100" and "Minsheng Daily". This chart differed from its predecessors, as it was based on record sales instead of votes. The chart continued the serial number of the "Top Mandarin Songs" and was published weekly in "Minsheng Daily". The statistical data source for the chart included record dealers in Northern, Central, Southern, and Eastern Taiwan. The rankings were determined by sales volume in each province, with provincial sales volume serving as the primary criterion. Collaborating radio stations included China Broadcasting Corporation (中國廣播公司), Police Broadcasting Service (警察廣播電台), Taiwan Broadcasting Company (台灣廣播公司), Cheng Sheng Broadcasting Corp. (正聲廣播公司), Taipei Broadcasting Station (台北市政廣播電台), Young Lion Broadcasting Station (幼獅廣播電台), Tiansheng Broadcasting Corporation (天聲廣播公司), Guosheng Broadcasting Corporation (國聲廣播公司), Chunghwa Broadcasting Co Ltd.(中華廣播公司), and Voice of Asia(亞洲之聲). Quarterly award ceremonies displayed the rankings by computer subtitles, with Chang Hsiao-yen announcing the order of the rankings from tenth to first place.
- In 1983, "Variety 100" held the "1983 third Quarter Pop Song Bestseller Chart Awards” (民國73年第三季流行歌曲暢銷排行金榜) ceremony live at the Kaohsiung Labor Recreation Center (高雄市勞工育樂中心). After hosting the "1984 third Quarter Pop Song Bestseller Chart Awards” ceremony in October 1984, Chang Hsiao-yen resigned, and "Variety 100" was subsequently suspended. Later, "You, Me, Him TV Weekly" (你我他電視周刊) and Wei Xin Broadcasting (威星傳播) agreed to resume publishing the "Top Mandarin Songs" (國語流行歌曲暢銷排行榜) list, starting from issue 390 (published on March 16, 1985).
- <Best-selling pop songs golden album award> (流行歌曲暢銷金碟獎)
- The "Pop Song Bestseller Chart Awards" was jointly organized by "Variety 100" and "Minsheng Daily". The inaugural edition was held in December 1983 with a registration deadline of December 6th, 1983. Record companies whose Mandarin and Hokkien songs had entered the top 20 of the "Pop Song Bestseller Chart" (流行歌曲暢銷排行金榜) in 1983 were eligible to participate by submitting their information via mail to the "Variety 100 Production Center" located at 3F, No. 16, Lane 96, Guangfu South Road, Taipei. The awards comprised of ten categories including "Best Male Singer", "Best Female Singer", "Best Record Production", "Best Composition", "Best Lyrics", "Best Arrangement", "Best Recording", "Best Costume Design", "Best Record Cover Design", and "Best Newcomer". Finalists were selected by a panel of experts and scholars from various fields and were then evaluated a second time. Winners were announced during the live broadcast of the award ceremony held at the Chung-Hwa Sports Hall (中華體育館) on January 1st, 1984, with one winner selected for each award.[10]
- The inaugural competition declared the following winners: Lee Shou-chuan (李壽全) received the Best Record Production Award for his work on Su rui (蘇芮)’s album "The Same Moonlight" (一樣的月光). Documentation
- In 1980, Hsiao Li-chu (蕭孋珠), signed to Kolin Records (歌林唱片), released a rendition of "The Girl Facing the Wind" (迎著風的女孩), a cover of "A-Ba-Ni-Bi" by Izhar Cohen and Alphabeta. "Variety 100" parodied the song's lyrics by substituting "A-Ba-Ni-Bi" with "Ah Ba Li Bi Wo Po Li Bei", transforming the song's meaning to "My dad is selling glass cups, my dad is selling glass cups and brooms," "My dad is selling glass cups, my mom is selling thermos cups, thermos cups, and my brother is selling goblets." This unexpected alteration made the song immensely popular.
- "The Variety 100" has won several Golden Bell Awards, including the Variety Program Award (1980, 1981, 1984), Variety Program Host Award (1980, 1981, 1983), Popular Entertainment Program Award (1980), Lighting Award (1980), Scriptwriting Award (1980), and Videography Award (1980).
- During the same broadcasting period as "Variety 100", TTV and CTV aired a total of 25 and 22 episodes respectively, each during the prime time slot of 8:00 pm every Sunday. Despite competing against 47 other rotating programs, "Variety 100" maintained an adaptable approach to cater to the ever-changing times. However, "Variety 100" was ultimately defeated by the Hong Kong drama "Chor Lau-heung," (楚留香) which was broadcasted on China Television Company.[14]
- On April 26, 1981, an episode of "Variety 100" was fined 180,000 Taiwanese dollars by the Government Information Office for exceeding the advertising airtime.
