Varsity Quiz is an academic quiz show on Vegas PBS[1]. The program is produced as a partnership between the Clark County School District, Vegas PBS and the Kiwanis Club of Las Vegas and has aired since 1969[2].
Format and production
Two teams from opposing high schools in the Las Vegas area compete to answer the most questions correctly over three rounds. Contestants are asked a variety of questions covering topics such as history, literature, math, and science. Winning teams advance through a tournament structure, with the top two teams being awarded college scholarships[2].
Junior Varsity Quiz is a similarly formatted show where the competitors are junior high students[2].
New seasons of Varsity Quiz are produced annually in the spring. Seasons consist of twelve episodes, each filmed at the Vegas PBS studio in Paradise, NV in front of a live audience[3].
In 2020, a former Varsity Quiz contestant from Liberty High School, Brayden Smith, appeared on Jeopardy![4]
On-air staff
Varsity Quiz is hosted by Nate Tannenbaum.[5]. Tannenbaum is the weather and traffic anchor for KLAS[6], the Las Vegas CBS affiliate. Alongside Varsity Quiz, Tannenbaum also hosts the CCSD Spelling Bee and Science Bowl for Vegas PBS[6]
