Founding and early history[edit]

Vasan Healthcare was founded as an independent pharmacy by A R Murugaiah, a former MP of Karur district in southern India. Mr. Murugaiah opened a single location in Trichy in 1947 and steadily expanded to nearby cities in the following years.

Corporate growth[edit]

At the time of Mr. Murugaiah’s death in the early 1990s, Vasan was a well-known pharmacy operator in the region. His son, Dr. A M Arun, took over the business in 1991 and began diversifying the organization to provide direct medical services, including eye care and dental care.

Dr. Arun opened Vasan’s first full-service eye care hospital in 2002. Numerous additional locations followed, setting the stage for a period of rapid growth that continued into the 2010s.

Dr. Arun passed away in 2020, at which time Vasan had some 600 ophthalmologists on staff and a combined care team of more than 6,000 employees capable of serving more than 10,000 walk-in patients every day. The company’s merger with ASG Eye Hospitals in 2023 made it one of the largest medical companies in India.
