Vasant Shankar Pawar (March 1927 – August 6, 1965)
Vasant Pawar was a leading Marathi film music composer in the 1950s and 1960s, and composed songs that generations of Marathi people grew up with, including the famous balgeet (children’s song) jhuku jhuku jhuku jhuku ageen gadi (झुकु झुकु झुकु झुकु अगिनगाडी) and the laavani bugadi majhi sandli ga (बुगडी माझी सांडली गं).
Life Story and Musical Accomplishments
Vasant Pawar was born in March 1927 in the town of Kolhapur in the state of Maharashtra, India. [2]
Pawar became an accomplished sitarist under the tutelage of Rahimat Khan [9], a leading exponent of the Gwalior Gharana. He was best known for the music he gave to films directed by the well-known Marathi director Anant Mane. [3] His first film was Ketakichya Banat. Pawar was the first composer to compose music for the poetry written by Bahinabai Choudhari, including the song arre sansar sansar. [4, 5] His other well-known songs include jhuku jhuku jhuku jhuku ageen gadi (झुकु झुकु झुकु झुकु अगिनगाडी), ghan ghan maala nabhi datilya sung by Manna Dey, solave varees dhokyache, and bugadi majhi sandli ga (बुगडी माझी सांडली गं). [6, 7]. Vasant Pawar also composed music for a few Hindi films. [8]
Vasant Pawar died at the age of 47, in August 1965 in the town of Miraj, Maharashtra. [2]
