Vassili Otškalenko (born in 12. september 1965, Ukraine, Apostolove Raion) is an Estonian child rapist, murderer and a pedophile.[1]

Early Life[edit]

He's from a working family. He and his family moved in Estonia, Haapsalu (year unknown) during the Soviet Union. He committed his first crime 19. december 1981 when he was 15 years old. He stole a van and crashed it while being drunk. During that time he was working in a car repair shop as a locksmiths apprentice.

Before his first murder he had already committed multiple crimes, most of them being thefts and other smaller crimes.

Pedophilia[edit]

According to the police documents, when Otškalenko was around 11 or 12, he used to peek at his neighbour, a 6 year old girl, and mastrubate.

One day he stole her bike. When their parents got together to discuss what to do about it, they left Otškalenko alone with her in his apartment. In an interview, years later, she said that she only remembers being scared while laying on the couch. He, on the other hand, said to the police that he remembers that moment very well. This was his first pedophilic episode. What happened exactly, is unknown.

He later said that he's blaiming her for his pedophilic urges and everything else he did after that in his life.

Victims[edit]

First victim[edit]

(Not confirmed)

April 8th, 1990. A 5 year old girl Diana Illarionova went missing in Haapsalu. A town that's always been a safe and a quiet place.

She was wearing red rainboots and a beige coat.

Everyone started looking for her. The police and dozens of volunteers went out and spent days in the woods looking for her, but nothing.

Three months later, she was found 30km away from Haapsalu.[2] On July 31st 1990, a berry picker found a red rainboot in the woods. Inside the boot was Diana's leg. Near the boot was a hole with a corpse in it. The body was shoved in the hole upside down, was naked and had underwear around its head. Her body was too decayed to tell the cause of death. The police suspected Otškalenko but had no evidence against him.

Police later destroyed all the files and Diana's death will always remain unsolved.[3]

  • Two months after Diana's dissapearence, Otškalenko broke into the local orphanage through the window during the night, when the police caught him he said he just wanted to steal some technology.

Second Victim[edit]

A year later, July 30th 1991, a 10 year old girl Svetlana Volkova went missing in Haapsalu.

The witness, a young boy who lived next door to Svetlana, said that he saw her walking towards the woods with "Vašja" (Otškalenko), who lived in the same house with them. Svetlana's mother told the police that she was aware that Otškalenko liked to peek at her daughter and sometimes even tied her up and tickled her.

On the day of her dissapearence, Otškalenko had visited Svetlana's mom and asked her what time and with who is her daughter going berry picking.

45 police officers went looking for her couple hours after she went missing.

Third Victim[edit]

Just hours after Svetlana's dissapearence.

Otškalenko attacked a 12 year old girl while she was riding a bike. He tore her away from the bike and dragged her into the woods where he raped her and cut her with a knife. Luckily, her brother noticed her bike on the ground, called their father and they started looking for her. Otškalenko heard them screaming her name, asked her "Are they looking for you?" to which she replied "yes they are", he got scared and ran away. The girl survived.

Her father took her to the police and she described his "gold front teeth" to them and they immediately knew who the person was.

The arrest[edit]

They went into his apartment and waited for him. Eventually he climbed through the window and they arrested Otškalenko. His wife told the police that he rarely uses the front door and his family is used to that. Also allegedly during his arrest, his wife just casually continued to watch tv like nothing was happening.

He confessed attacking the girl and also killing Svetlana.

He told the police where he hid Svetlana's body and helped them look for it and even dug it out. Locals found out about it and went there to see what "the monster" looks like. The police even had to protect him from people trying to harm him.

Svetlana was raped and strangled, naked in a hole and had underwear around her head.[4]

He was charged and got death penalty at first but later it was changed to life in prison.

2021: Early release and the petition[edit]

In fall of 2021 some noticed Otškalenko walking around Haapsalu. Even aften 23 years, people still recognized him and the panic and fear spread across the internet.[4]

Someone contacted the prison and they said that Otškalenko has applied for early release, and due to his good behaviour he is allowed to visit his step-father who lives near Haapsalu.

People were terrified of their children's safety and after hearing that the court is considering his release, they started a petition online and the whole thing blew up.[5]

Then the court finally made their decision- he was not released.[6]
