Vaya Space is a Florida based Private Spaceflight Company.

The company is building a launch vehicle called Dauntless. Vaya Space is a purpose-driven, sustainability focused, and environmentally conscious enterprise dedicated to making a difference for humankind. Vaya Space competes in the small satellite launch sector.[1]

History[edit]

Vaya Space was created in 2017 by Sidney M. Gutierrez, former Space Shuttle Commander and NASA’s first US-born Hispanic astronaut.  He was the pilot on STS-40 and Commander of STS-59. Gutierrez now serves as on the Board of Directors for Vaya Space.

The Company's name, Vaya Space, is derived from a story from Gutierrez's NASA career. At T-2 minutes during the STS-59 count, the last call to the crew from the orbiter test conductor was: “Endeavour, close and lock your visors, initiate O2 flow, and ‘Vaya con Dios!’[2]

Previously, the company was known as Rocket Crafters but when they moved from research and development into the commercial market, they rebranded.

Dauntless Launch Vehicle[edit]

Powered by the Vortex-Hybrid Engine, the Dauntless Launch Vehicle is capable of sending more than 1000kg of payload into low earth orbit, and more than 600+ kg to sun synchronous orbit.[3] The inaugural launch is planned for 2024.

Patents[edit]

Vaya Space, the vortex-hybrid engine rocket company and emerging leader in sustainable space access, announced today that the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has awarded two patents to the Company on its breakthrough vortex-hybrid propulsion technology.[4][5]

Vaya Space's first patent was awarded for its unique production process of its 3D printed fuel grain that enables higher performance through uniform burn throughout the entirety of the engine.[6]

The second patent protects Vaya Space's vortex flow field injection system design. The vortex flow of liquid oxygen through the 3D lathe printed rocket engine combines with Vaya's other technologies to deliver more than 110 kN of thrust per engine, up to 350 seconds of ISP, and eliminates the instability and other issues that have plagued hybrid engines of the past decades.[6]

Launch Sites[edit]

Launch Complex 13[edit]

In 2023, US Space Force allocated Cape Canaveral Launch Complex 13 to Vaya Space along side Phantom Space.

Eco-Friendly[edit]

Vaya Space aims to revolutionize space and make a difference for humankind by reducing plastics on the planet by using them as them as the source of the materials used to create their 3d printed fuel grain.[7]
