Veggie Alternatives is a mobile app released by AYUSH Apps that provides food substitutes to vegans, vegetarians, and those interested in healthy eating. The app is free to users on both the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store, who can also submit content for inclusion in the app.[1]. From initially featuring only vegan foods, Veggie Alternatives has expanded to include a forum where users can discuss topics, as well as information on vegan and vegetarian diets[2].
Background and content
Veggie Alternatives was initially founded under the name Vegan Alternatives by student Ayush Sanghavi after his own difficulties finding vegetarian and vegan foods, providing hundreds of recommendations for vegan food alternatives with the aim of 'making life easier for new vegans'[3]. The app also featured product prices and advice for vegetarians and vegans[4].
In October 2017, Vegan Alternatives was rebranded Veggie Alternatives in a move to appeal to the wider market of vegans and vegetarians, as compared to the previous market of just vegans[5].
The App Store version, when released in March 2019, expanded Veggie Alternatives to include a variety of new products and substitutes. Other new features included a Forum where users can discuss a variety of topics, as well as an Assistant feature that allows users to speak to their phones and receive information on navigating the app and finding 'alternatives'[2].
User access is free to encourage crowd-sourced content provision. As of March 2019, Veggie Alternatives contains over 300 food substitutions for 38 different food types[1].
Release and reception
Since Android release in July 2016[6], Veggie Alternatives garnered much critical success. Founder Ayush Sanghavi was interviewed on BBC Radio 1's The Surgery as part of their 'Tech for Good' episode[7], while animal-rights charity PETA UK awarded him their 'Compassionate Teen Award'. PETA UK director Elisa Allen stated that "[Veggie Alternatives] will make it easier than ever to choose cruelty-free foods"[4].
Reviews and features of the app were also released by various charities and publications, such as Vegan Outreach[3], VegPlanet Magazine[8], Vegan Life Magazine and TryVeg.com[8]. The Veggie Alternatives brand has notably been endorsed by meat-free giant Quorn[9]. In late 2017, Healthline featured Veggie Alternatives as one of "The Best Vegan Apps of the Year" of 2017[10]
Veggie Alternatives was released to the Apple App Store in March 2019, and notably reached rank 53 in the App Store 'Top Charts' for the Food & Drink category on the day of release[11].
