Velocity 9

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Velocity 9 is a fictional drug in the comic Flash.

Velocity 9[edit]

Velocity 9 is a highly addictive drug that grants temporary super speed, but speeds up the body's metabolism leading to dehydration, severe exhaustion, psychosis and what looks like rapid aging, but is actually the body feeding off itself to a super accelerated degree. Within a very short time of regularly using, the user would shoot up, which would physically invigorate their bodies for an undetermined amount of time. As the drug wore off, they would begin to wither to an emaciated state within hours. Upon using again, they would quickly revert to their normal size and strength, quickly taking the opportunity to find more money to feed their habits. Most addicts became temporary super-criminals, using their super-speed to steal more money for Velocity-9, repeating this cycle over and over again until they damaged their body to a sometimes fatal degree. While the formula mimicked the same aura that protected the Flashes against friction and other factors associated with traveling at super-speed, it did not completely protect against the shock traveling at such a speed would have on the body. Many former addicts became invalids afterwards with organ failure and permanent warping of their bones from the constant stress and micro-fractures from their running. One of the first addicts to confront the Flash was a friend of his whose mind had been twisted from using to such a degree that he became Flash's short lived arch enemy, even going as far as to don a costume and terrorizing his loved ones and friends. Once captured and clean of the drug, he spent months in physical rehabilitation to try and fight the crippling effects the drug had on his body, with the Flash checking up on him periodically after they reconciled their friendship. The original formula, developed by Edward Clariss, had no such side effects, but the effects were only temporary. It was the subsequent impure version of the formula that would become the street drug that, for a time, plagued the speedsters. Later Deathstroke was able to fashion a particular variant of Velocity 9, devoid of any ill-effects, for Inertia's use, after Bart Allen internalised the Speed Force following his return so that others couldn't channel it.[1] While this version does not have any debilitating effects on the body, it is not known whether it still has the same addictive qualities. If Inertia and the Rival are the only known examples of using this new formula, then the way he reacts to not having a supply of it may very well confirm its addictive nature.

Velocity 10[edit]

Velocity 10 is a derivative of Velocity 9. The drug also granted its users super speed but with a different consequence; It caused different parts of the body to metabolize at different rates.

Other media[edit]

In "Legends of Today", an episode of the television series The Flash, a drug called Velocity 6 (V6) is developed by Earth-2's Harrison Wells and Caitlin Snow to make the Barry Allen Flash faster against Zoom by improving his ability to take in oxygen using the heat he generated via lightning when he runs. The older Jay Garrick Flash takes the V6, temporarily restoring his own speed, to save Wells' life by removing a bullet preventing Caitlin from operating on Wells. However, Jay states that he will never use the drug again, nor wants Barry to ever take it. In the episode "Welcome to Earth Two", Jay reveals that he had experimented with V6 on Earth-Two to make himself faster, but it ended up making him sick, slowly killing him. Caitlin makes a serum called Velocity 7 to give Jay his speed without the negative side effects. It appears effective until it stops working during Jay's fight against Geomancer. Later, Caitlin says that she plans to make more versions of the drug to help Jay.[2][3] In the next episode, "Escape from Earth Two", Caitlin creates Velocity 8, which is made to last longer. However, after simulations show the same long term effects, she makes Velocity 9 (V9) instead to correct the problems. During V9's development, Caitlin had asked Eliza Harmon for help, as she was having trouble with the synthesis. She sent information on 3 of the 8 components to Eliza. After Geomancer damages a building to draw out the Flash while Barry is on Earth-2, Jay takes V9, giving him his speed back long enough to save the people inside. It's then shown that V9 is beginning to restore Jay's regenerative abilities, repairing the cells damaged from using V6. In episode 16 ("Trajectory"), a new speedster calling herself "Trajectory" appears. She turns out to be a colleague of Caitlin Snow's who used a reverse-engineered V9 to gain superhuman speed and wreak havoc on Central City. The drug caused Eliza to develop an immoral split personality which became Trajectory. This version of V9 is a highly addictive drug that causes rapid cellular decay if overused. When Trajectory is nearly defeated by the Flash, she takes more V9. As she runs off, her lightning turns blue, like Zoom's, and she dissolves into dust (possibly due to the accelerated cellular degeneration). During the conflict, Barry finds out about V9's existence and considers using it to increase his own speed and defeat Zoom. However, after some advice from Wells, he decides not to use the drug and destroys the only remaining sample.
