Vernon James Geberth, M.S., M.P.S., is an American author, educator and consultant on forensic techniques, and homicide and death investigations, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences. He is a retired Lieutenant Commander from the New York City Police Department (N.Y.P.D.), where he served as the Commanding Officer of the Bronx Homicide Task Force.[1][2][3][4][5] Geberth, who has analyzed over 8,000 homicides, helped to standardize methods for law enforcement to carry out murder investigations and examine the possible motives of offenders, particularly those committing serial sexual homicide and other sex crimes.[6] He has summarized his techniques in several textbooks, including Practical Homicide Investigation: Tactics, Procedures, and Forensic Techniques,[7] the Practical Homicide Investigation Checklist and Field Guide,[8] and Sex-Related Homicide and Death Investigation: Practical and Clinical Perspectives.[9] He also co-authored Autoerotic Deaths: Practical Forensic and Investigative Perspectives[10] with Forensic Pathologist Dr. Anny Sauvageau. He has written over 100 articles in forensic journals, contributing to the literature on serial murder, [11] suicide investigations,[12] fetal abduction,[13] missteps at crimes scenes,[14][15][16] and the use of DNA technology for forensic purposes,[17] among other topics.

Geberth has served as an Adjunct Professor of Criminal Justice at Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, New York and John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City. He was affiliated with the University of Delaware's Continuing Education Program, as an Associate Professor, and served on the faculty of Northwestern University Traffic Institute as a Homicide Instructor.[18][19]

Geberth, who was a Fox News contributor from 2010 to 2015, has been referenced as a media consultant in several prominent cases in the United States and Canada, including those of Imette St. Guillen;[20] serial murderers Dennis Rader and David Parker Ray;[21][22] the Long Island Serial Killer;[23][24] Jon Benet Ramsey;[25] O.J. Simpson;[26] and the death of Michelle O'Connell.[27] He has also appeared on "60 Minutes,"Frontline," "Crime Watch Daily, and other programs.[28]

Biography[edit]

Geberth was born in Mt. Vernon, New York. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) degree from Iona College in New Rochelle, New York, a Master’s in Professional Studies (M.P.S.) in Criminal Justice from the C.W. Post College campus of Long Island University, and a Master’s Degree (M.S.) in Clinical Psychology from California Coast University in Santa Ana, California. He graduated from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (F.B.I.) National Academy in 1979. Geberth entered the N.Y.P.D. in 1965. He was promoted to Detective in 1968 and worked in Narcotics, City-Wide Anti-Crime, Robbery, and Homicide. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1971. The following year, Geberth supervised a City-Wide Major Crime Joint Federal & State Investigation into the Mafia. In 1973, he was promoted to Detective Sergeant, continuing his investigative work in Narcotics and Homicide. A decade later, he was promoted to Lieutenant in charge of investigations. Geberth became Commanding Officer of The Bronx Homicide Task Force in 1985 and was promoted to Lieutenant Commander the next year. Geberth is a member of the NYPD’s Honor Legion.[29][30]
