Vestfoldsk (Norwegian: Vestfoldmål, Vestfoldsk) is an East Norwegian dialect group, part of the Vikværsk dialect group of the Norwegian language. The language is spoken in the provinces of Vestfold and Grenland in Vestfold og Telemark county, and in the southern part of the province of Numedal in Viken county.
Dialects and variations
The most well known Vestfoldsk dialects are Tønsbergmål (Central Vestfoldsk), the local dialect of the city of Tønsberg and municipality of Færder, Sandefjordsmål (Southern Vestfoldsk), the local dialect of the city of Sandefjord and municipality of Larvik, and Grenlandsmål, the local dialect of the cities of Porsgrunn and Skien.
Other dialects of Vestfoldsk are Northern Vestfoldsk, the local dialect of the municipalities of Horten and Holmestrand, and Southern Numedalsk, the local dialect of the municipality of Kongsberg.
There is also a less known variation of the Central Vestfoldsk dialect, Inner Vestfoldsk (Norwegian: Bygdemål), that is spoken in the small villages of Andebu, Barkåker, Fon, Hof, Kodal, Revetal, Svarstad and Vivestad, but this variation is very endangered, and most of its speakers are adults older than 30.
