Vesuvius Records [International Record Label]

Vesuvius Records[1] is a record label.[2] Vesuvius Records releases recordings in several nations, including Italy, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Vesuvius Records released albums from American recording artists like Tina Turner[3][4] and Fontella Bass.[5][6] Pompeii Music Corporation pressed subsidiary Vesuvius Records [US] vinyl in the 1960s. Pat Morgan merged the company with Computer System Management and renamed the company CSM-Pompeii. Vesuvius Records and Turtle Creek records became subsidiaries of CSM-Pompeii. CSM-Pompeii owned their own pressing plant, Reco-Press, of Dallas, TX, that pressed the legendary Tina Turner & Fontella Bass vinyl records.[7] CSM-Pompeii became the manufacturer of several Vesuvius Records [US] releases in the 1960s. Vesuvius Records [Italy] released albums from Italian recording artists like MINA[8][9][circular reference]. Vesuvius Records [UK] released several albums from United Kingdom recording artists, and their first release, In Spelunca, was a compilation album featuring The Yummy Fur[10], Lungleg, Sally Skull, Hello Skinny, Jad Fair[11] and others. The lo-fi production value was an element of the larger lo-fi movement of the era.

Vesuvius Records [UK] band members, local artists, and activists Pat Crook, Brian MacDougall, and illustrator Marc Baines helped the label and applied the DIY approach with album production.[12] Between 1995 and 1998, Vesuvius Records [UK] released 18 records in various sizes (7", 10", and 12" vinyl), as well as CDs, cassettes, and several comic books, developing a reputation for quality and professional illustration.

Launching the careers of several local bands, like Lungleg, The Yummy Fur[13] and Ganger[14], and supporting international acts like Half Japanese, Yo La Tengo and Dymaxion, Vesuvius Records [UK] ceased production of new releases in 1999 and remains dormant.

Music Distribution

CSM-Pompeii pressed Vesuvius Records vinyls during the 1960s in America. London Records distributed the records in the United Kingdom during the 1960s. Universal Music Group obtained distribution rights of the pre-1971 London Records catalog because Decca Records was the parent company of London Records. Digital distribution is changing the music distribution landscape. Tencent purchased 10 percent of Universal Music Group in 2019.[15] The digital distribution of the legendary 1960s Tina Turner & Fontella Bass recordings on Vesuvius Records might be under the umbrella of Universal Music Group because of the music distribution contracts CSM-Pompeii signed with London Records during the 1960s. Digital distribution[16] laws are changing the language of modern music distribution contracts. However, the music distribution contracts CSM-Pompeii signed with London Records during the 1960s might be valid under the ownership of Universal Music Group unless new music distribution contracts exist elsewhere.

Music Sync Licensing

The music sync license rights of titles from the Vesuvius Records catalog are the subject of several music industry lawsuits. Fontella Bass's early recordings with CSM-Pompeii caused legal action when the Fontella Bass composition "Rescue Me" was employed in a 1993 American Express commercial. Chess Records obtained American distribution rights under the subsidiary label Checker Records. Fontella Bass is considered a pioneer of female composers in the modern music industry. The advent of digital distribution curtailed the complex legal action of physical distribution laws that caused legal name changes between Decca Records and American record labels. CSM-Pompeii was a friend of the court in the legal action of Tina Turner reclaiming the rights of exploitation of the name "Tina Tuner." That court decision let Tina Turner perform and deliver music product under the name "Tina Turner." The rights of exploitation of the Vesuvius Records vinyl names, images, and likenesses are under the scope of music publishing laws. The Tina Turner & Fontella Bass vinyls pressed at the CSM-Pompeii company became rare records. The names "Tina Turner" and "Fontella Bass" were used in Hollywood films.
