Vicky Ireland
Vicky Ireland MBE (born 21 April 1945) is an English actor, television presenter, playwright, director and campaigner for children’s arts.
Training and stage work
Ireland trained at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.[1]
She joined Belgrade Theatre’s newly formed Theatre-in-Education Company as an actor/teacher.
TV presenting and writing
Ireland presented the BBC children’s TV show Words and Pictures from 1982 to 1989.[2]
In 1989, Ireland adapted Allan Ahlberg’s ‘Happy Families’ books for BBC TV.
Polka Theatre
From 1988 to 2002, Ireland was the Artistic Director of Polka Theatre. During Ireland’s time at Polka, she commissioned writers including Alan Ayckbourn, Philip Pullman, David Holman, Jamila Gavin, Malorie Blackman, Charles Way and Mike Kenny.[3]
Nick Hern Books has published five of Ireland's stage adaptations of novels by Jacqueline Wilson. These adaptations include stage versions of Wilson's novels Secrets, The Suitcase Kid, Midnight and The Lottie Project.[4]
In 2002, Ireland was awarded an MBE for services to children’s drama.[5]
Campaigning for children’s arts
In 1998, Ireland co-founded the charity Action for Children's Arts, which campaigns for children’s rights to the arts, connects arts practitioners and celebrates children’s arts in the UK.
