Victor Mendoza (born March 1, 1956 in Chihuaha, Mexico) is a latin-jazz vibraphonist, composer, producer and educator.

Jazziz Magazine named him "the genre's leading vibraphone practitioner" and "one of today's most resourceful composers."

He endorses Yamaha vibraphones, Vic Firth mallets (M23 signature model), Zildjian cymabls and MalletKat.

Biography[edit]

As a small child Mendoza studied flute before switching to percussion. He relocated to the USA shortly before he entered his teens, studying music education and orchestral percussion at Northern Arizona University after which he went to Berklee College Of Music to study jazz[1].

As a Performer[edit]

His first release from 1984, Victor Mendoza, features Ed Uribe, Oscar Stagnaro, John Lockwood, Bruce Arnold and Allan Chase. His album If You Only Knew features a collaboration with Paquito D´Rivera, brazilian trumpet player Claudio Roditi and his former Berklee student, Grammy award winner Danilo Perez. The third recording as a leader, This is Why, features Alain Mallet, Dario Eskenazi and Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez leading Latin Beat Magazine to name him one of the Outstanding Latin Jazz Artists of the Year in 1994. His last outing Black Bean Blues features Grammy award winner and former student Antonio Sanchez, Jim Odgren, Alain Mallet and Fernando Huergo. "Black Bean Blues" was named one of the best Latin jazz recordings of the year by Modern Drummer Magazine and led Jazziz Magazine to dub him "the genre's leading vibraphone practitioner" and "one of today's most resourceful composers." The recording has also been included in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History collection.[2]

His music has also been featured on TV shows like Days of Our Lives, General Hospital, One Life to Live and King of The Hill. His playing is also featured on the film Hugo Pool on one of his collaborations with Danilo Perez who scored the soundtrack of the movie.

He has also performed as a soloist with numerous orchestras during his career such as World Festival Orchestra under the direction of Paquito D'Rivera, the Milan Svoboda Orchestra in Prague, sold-out shows at Queen Elizabeth Hall in London and in Tel Aviv, and as soloist with the Carlos Chávez Symphony Orchestra in Mexico City.

Recent presentations include a solo appearance with the 85-piece Banda del Puerto in Valencia, Spain, under the direction of award-winning conductor Isidro Coll Ballesteros, as well as with the Granada Symphony in Spain.[3]

As an Educator[edit]

After graduation from Berklee, in 1983, he became a faculty member under the recommendation of his former teacher Gary Burton. He has taught for the college since then in the Boston campus until 2012 when he was appointed Director for the Contemporary Studio Performance Master´s Program at the college´s newly established Valencia campus in Spain. In 2014 he stepped down as Director of the Program to be a full-time professor again, teaching Ensembles, Private Instruction, Composition, Production and Pedagogy at both the Graduate and Undergraduate programs.[4] He has been an invaluable resource in helping to forge a Latin music curriculum at Berklee.[5] He is the author of the DVD Latin Jazz Grooves as part of the Berklee Workshop series and published by Hal Leonard.

His educational activity also includes clinics and master classes in other universities around the world: University of Oregon, Universidad Veracruzana (Mexico), Royal Northern College of Music (UK), Birmingham Conservatoire (UK), Universidad del Valle (Colombia) among others.

He has also participated as both a performer and an educator in some of the most important percussion festivals around the world: PASIC, Festival Internacional de la Marimba (Chiapas, Mexico), Festival Internacional de la Patagonia (Argentina), Berklee World Percussion Festival, Perkuska (Poland), Journées de la Percussion (Paris, France), Festival de Percusión de Puerto Rico, Rhythm Sticks Festival (UK), Percussion Days (Belgium) & the Encontro Internacional de Percussão (Sao Paulo, Brazil).[6]
