Victor Ng is a Canadian family and emergency physician,.[1] medical educator, and health-system leader known for his contributions to medical education, medical leadersihp and global health. He serves as the Assistant Dean, Distributed Education[2] and Associate Professor at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University. Ng is also the Director, Programs and Practice Support[3] at the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC).

He is a leader and educator within the World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA)[4], including work on postgraduate education standards, continuing professional development frameworks, and physician leadership on health systems globally. He also serves as Chair of the Board of Directors[5] at Casey House in Toronto, Canada's first and only stand-alone hospital for people living with HIV/AIDS[6].

Early life and education

He received an Honours Bachelor of Kinesiology and Masters of Science degrees at the University of Western Ontario (Western University)[7]. He earned his medical degree at the University of Manitoba and residency training in family and emergency medicine at Western University and his Master of Health Professional Education at Maastrict University.[8] He completed the Directors Education Program and achieving his ICD.D designation through the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto[9]

Career

Health-system leadership

Ng served as an Associate Medical Director at the Scarborough Health Network, supporting clinical operations, system planning, and medical leadership development[10].

Western University

Ng is the Assistant Dean, Distributed Education at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, providing strategic leadership for Western University's distributed medical education network across Southwestern Ontario. His work includes rural and regional medical education, service-learning integration, and social accountability initiatives.[11]

Ng led the development of the Sarnia–Lambton longitudinal clerkship program[12] and leads planning for a regional family medicine residency program aimed at strengthening local health human resources and improving access to care in under-served regions.[13][14]

His academic work includes global health, medical education, medical leadership and health systems research.[15]

College of Family Physicians of Canada

He currently serves as the College's Director, Programs and Practice Support, where he oversees program development, practice resources and wellness initiatives.[16][17]

Governance and Board

Ng is the Chair of the Board of Directors at Casey House Hospital and Foundation, a specialty hospital providing care for people living with HIV/AIDS and individuals with complex needs related to mental health, substance use, and social marginalization. His leadership has focused on governance modernization, fundraising, and supporting equity-deserving populations.[18]

He is a board member of William Osler Health System[19] and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.

Global leadership

World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA)

He was the 2023-2025 President of WONCA North America Region[20] and has served on the WONCA Executive Committee.

He was the founding chair of the Emergency Medicine Special Interest Group[21] and later the Chair of the Working Party on Education.[22] Ng played a key role in establishing the Young Doctors' Movement in North America, which evolved into WONCA Polaris.[23]

Global standards and accreditation

Ng led the development of the WONCA Global Standards for Postgraduate Family Medicine Education[24] and the WONCA Global Standards for Continuing Professional Development.[25] These frameworks have influenced family medicine training programs and accreditation systems in multiple countries.[26]

He has supported international primary care capacity-building projects, including health-system development, medical education and accreditation initiatives in the USA,[27] Japan[28] and Nepal.[29] In 2019, Ng led the organization of a large emergency medicine conference in Kathmandu where he also served as the oration speaker highlighting them important role general practitioners and emergency medicine physicians play in response to acute medicine and disaster medicine in Nepal.[30]
