Victoria Shanmugam

Victoria Shanmugam is an American physician-scientist who currently serves as the inaugural director of the Office of Autoimmune Disease Research at the National Institutes of Health. She previously served as chief of rheumatology at the George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences.[1]

Education

Shanmugam graduated from the University of Oxford with a B.A. in physiology and completed her medical degree at Imperial College School of Medicine, graduating with honors in medicine. She is a member of the Royal College of Physicians. Shanmugam completed her Internal Medicine Residency and Rheumatology Fellowship at the Georgetown University School of Medicine.[1]

Career

In 2007, Shanmugam joined the faculty of the Georgetown University School of Medicine. Her research focused on scleroderma and wound healing. While on the faculty, she served as the chair of Georgetown's Institutional review board.[1]

In 2014, Shanmugam moved to the George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences to become chief of rheumatology.[2]

Shanmugam was appointed the inaugural director of the Office of Autoimmune Disease Research shortly after its creation in the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2023.[3] In that role, she oversees research into autoimmune disease across the NIH.[1]

Shanmugam has served in multiple leadership roles for the American College of Rheumatology.[1] She is also the host of ACR Journals on Air, a popular rheumatology podcast.[4]

Personal life

Shanmugam lives in Washington, D.C., and is married to Kannon Shanmugam, a prominent lawyer known for his litigation in the U.S. Supreme Court. They have three children.[5]
