Victorien Bruguier was a French trade unionist born in 1858 in Montclus (Gard) and died on December 28, 1941.[1]

Biography[edit]

Victorien Bruguier was a tailor and the co-founder of the union chamber of tailors and dress cutters in 1879, then of the Nîmes labor exchange in 1887. On February 7th and 8th, 1892, he participated in the constitutive congress of the Federation of Labor market, held in Saint-Étienne.[2] He also participated in the congresses of 1895 and 1902. Each time, he adopted a moderate stance.

Possibilist socialist militant, he was municipal councilor of Nîmes from 1888 to 1896, elected on a list ranging from socialists to moderate republicans, opposed to the “reactionary” list. He had the municipal council adopt free school supplies and the creation of a labor exchange. In 1889 and 1900, he was delegated to the universal exhibitions held in Paris. From 1899, Victorien Bruguier was also president of the 'Université populaire, which he founded.

He was the father of Georges Bruguier.
