Vijay Rao, MD, FACR is a diagnostic radiologist practicing in the United States. Rao is currently the David C. Levin Professor, Chair of the Department of Radiology at Thomas Jefferson University, and Senior Vice-President of Enterprise Radiology, Jefferson Health.[1]

Training and Career

Rao received her medical degree from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. She then completed her diagnostic radiology residency. After graduating, she joined Jefferson’s faculty in 1978. While at Jefferson, she has served as the radiology residency program director, Vice-Chair for Education, and Co-Director of the Neuroradiology/ENT division. In 2002, Rao became the Chair of Jefferson’s Department of Radiology, the first female clinical chair in Jefferson’s history. She has been on Thomas Jefferson University Hospital’s Board of Trustees since 2012.[2] [3]

Rao has served on numerous national committees in a variety of leadership roles. Some of her notable accomplishments include serving as the President of the Association of Program Directors in Radiology (2002-2003), President of the American Association of Head and Neck Radiology (2004-2005), President of the American Association of Women Radiologists (2010-2011), and President of the Radiological Society of North America (2017-2018).[4][5]

Research and Editorial Experience

Rao is a recognized leader in imaging of the head and neck and has published over 220 peer-reviewed articles and 10 book chapters.[6][7][8] She has given over 250 presentations at national and international meetings. She is also a respected health services researcher in imaging economics and utilization trends.[9][10][11][12]

Rao has additionally been involved in multiple editorial boards and as a manuscript reviewer for radiology journals such as Academic Radiology, Journal of the American College of Radiology, Journal of the American Roentgen Ray Society, Neuroradiology, and more.[13]

Awards

Rao has been awarded a variety of honors for clinical excellence throughout her career. She has been recognized as a Top Doctor in Radiology in Philadelphia Magazine, America’s Top Doctors for Cancer, and Best Doctors in America for many years. In 2006, she was awarded the Achievement Award from the Association of Program Directors in Radiology for her contributions to radiology education. In 2010, she received the Distinguished Radiologist Award from the American Association of Radiologists of Indian Origin. In 2014, she received both the Association of University Radiologists Gold Medal Award and the Marie-Sklodowska-Curie Award from the AAWR.[14] In 2018, she received the Gold Medal from the Asian Oceanian Society of Radiology. She has additionally been awarded Honorary Membership to the Israel Radiological Society, French Society of Radiology, and the European Society of Radiology.[15]
