Vijay Wadhwa^[1] (born in Mumbai) is is an Indian real estate developer and the Chairman Emeritus of The Wadhwa Group[2], one of Mumbai’s leading real estate development companies. Widely regarded as a visionary in the city’s property landscape, he has played a significant role in shaping urban living through landmark residential, commercial, and mixed-use developments known for design excellence, practicality, and long-term value. Over a career spanning more than five decades, Vijay Wadhwa has been instrumental in steering the Group to deliver over 100 notable projects, establishing it as a brand synonymous with trust, craftsmanship, and timely delivery.

Early Life and Career

Vijay Wadhwa was born and raised in Mumbai and completed his education at The Scindia School, Gwalior, a prestigious Indian boarding school known for holistic learning. He comes from a family associated with business and real estate. His father, Vasudev C. Wadhwa[3], migrated to Mumbai from Mathura in 1964 with ₹10,000, initially starting with money lending and land-related transactions before expanding into real estate development.

At the age of 17, in May 1969, Vijay Wadhwa joined his father’s construction business, marking the beginning of his long career in the sector. Guided by his father’s foundational philosophy that real estate should enhance lives and foster communities, he played a critical role in expanding the Group’s presence across Mumbai.

Leadership and Contributions

Under Vijay Wadhwa’s leadership, The Wadhwa Group scaled its portfolio across Mumbai and neighbouring regions, developing residential towers, commercial complexes, and large integrated townships. He is also recognised for promoting environmentally conscious development, most notably through Wadhwa Wise City^[2], a township planned with a focus on climate resilience, natural living, and sustainable infrastructure.

While he is often associated with contributing to major business districts such as the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Vijay Wadhwa is also known for his design philosophy emphasising natural elements—light, ventilation, and openness. These principles are reflected in the Group’s planning approach and are often referred to under the design ideology of “Ventilit”, which highlights height, light, and air in built spaces.

In an interview with The CEO Magazine^[3], he discussed the importance of integrating environmental considerations, natural illumination, and cross-ventilation into modern building design, reiterating the Group’s long-term focus on sustainability.[4]

Recognition and Later Work

Vijay Wadhwa has been honoured with several industry awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award at the ABP News Real Estate Awards (2017), recognising his contribution to India’s real estate sector. Even as Chairman Emeritus, he remains actively involved in strategic decision-making, design review, and mentoring the next generation of the organisation’s leadership.

He also oversees the Group’s CSR initiatives, which include educational institutions such as the Arya Vidya Mandir School, reinforcing the organisation’s commitment to community welfare and nation-building.
