Vikki Stark
Vikki Stark is a psychotherapist, marriage counsellor, family therapist, and author, originally from New York City and based in Montreal, Canada. She has written several books, including My Sister, My Self (McGraw Hill, 2005), and Runaway Husbands (Green Light Press, 2010, revised in 2023)[1]. She is known for her work in the field of wife abandonment, and for her book and community called Runaway Husbands.
Stark has been a psychotherapist since 1985. She has a B.A. from Barnard College (1971), and an M.S.W. from New York University (1985). She has worked with individuals, couples and families, as well as been a therapy supervisor and teacher. She founded and was the director of the Sedona Counselling Centre of Montreal (2009-2024).[2]
In 2010, Stark published Runaway Husbands: The Abandoned Wife's Guide to Recovery and Renewal[3], which is based on a study of over 400 women worldwide who believed they were in happy marriages until their husbands left suddenly. The book explores Wife Abandonment Syndrome[4], a term she coined, and offers heartbroken women strategies for recovery after this event.
As a result of the Runaway Husbands book[5] and website, she has mentored a worldwide community of women and regularly conducts online therapy groups as well as divorce recovery retreats in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic and Sedona, Arizona.
She has had more than four million views of her blog on Psychology Today Magazine called "Schlepping Through Heartbreak", [6] which deals with all aspects of relationships.
