Dr. Vikram Kate

Vikram Kate (born 24 December 1961) is an Indian surgeon, academic administrator, and medical educator specializing in general and gastrointestinal surgery. He is the Dean (Academic) and a Senior Consultant Surgeon at the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Puducherry.[1] His work focuses on surgical gastroenterology, enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS), and postgraduate surgical education.

Early life and education

Vikram Kate completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree in 1983 and a Master of Surgery (MS) in General Surgery in 1987 from Nagpur University. He later obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Surgical Gastroenterology from Pondicherry University in 2000.

He pursued advanced surgical training in the United Kingdom and was awarded Fellowships of the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow (2003), Edinburgh (2006), and England (2010).[2][3]

Career

Kate joined JIPMER in 1988 and has held various academic and administrative roles, including Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Professor of Surgery, and Head of the Department of Surgery. In January 2023, he was appointed Dean (Academic) at JIPMER, where he is responsible for academic governance, curriculum development, and oversight of examination systems.[4]

Research and clinical work

Kate’s research interests include gastrointestinal surgery, emergency abdominal surgery, perioperative nutrition, enhanced recovery after surgery protocols, and Helicobacter pylori–related disorders. His research has been presented at international scientific forums, including Digestive Disease Week (DDW), where several studies were selected for plenary sessions.[5][6]

He has also contributed to the development of cost-effective diagnostic approaches for Helicobacter pylori infection in clinical practice at JIPMER.[7]

Teaching and mentorship

Kate has extensive experience in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. He has supervised postgraduate dissertations and doctoral research and has contributed to structured assessment methods in surgical training, including the introduction of objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs).

Editorial roles

Kate serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the Indian Journal of Surgery for the 2025–2030 term.[8] He is also Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Advanced Medical and Health Research[9] and Annals of Minimal Access Surgery & Allied Sciences.[10] In addition, he is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery, the official journal of the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract.[11]

Awards and recognition

Kate has received national and international recognition for his contributions to surgical education and clinical research. In 2018, he received the Distinguished DNB Teacher of Excellence Award from the Association of National Board Accredited Institutions.[12] He has also delivered several named orations at national surgical conferences in India.[13]

Professional affiliations

Kate is affiliated with several professional organizations, including the Association of Surgeons of India, Indian Association of Surgical Gastroenterology, American College of Surgeons, American College of Gastroenterology, and the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract.[14]
