History[edit]

According to some historians, the settlement of this area took place in the early days of the foundation of Portugal.

The names of the oldest settlements do not go beyond the 12th and 13th centuries, such as: Pobrais, from the archaic "Pobra", designated the establishments of settlers at that time; and Rabigordo, which will have originated in the nickname of one of the medieval settlers, whose estate gave name to the village.

In the origin of the designation Vila Facaia, the term "Vila" represents the archaic sense of the word, an agrarian-territorial possession, appearing "Facaia" as the name or nickname of its first owner.

The town's patron saint, Santa Catarina, suggests that the settlement of this territory is recent, because the devotion to this saint only begins to be noticed among us at that time. Despite everything the Parish will only appear mentioned in the fourteenth century.
