Villa Copenhagen is a five-star luxury hotel located in a landmark heritage building at Tietgensgade 35 in Copenhagen, Denmark. The building that houses Villa Copenhagen was constructed in the early 1900s as the headquarters of the Danish Post and Telegraph service (Post- og Telegrafvæsenet). The Villa Copenhagen building exemplifies early twentieth-century Danish public architecture, featuring a grand Neo-Baroque facade characterized by rusticated stonework, large arched windows, and ornate decorative detailing.[6] Originally designed by Danish architect Heinrich Wenck and completed in 1912, the structure occupies an entire city block, with its scale reflecting the civic importance of its original function as Denmark's central postal hub.[7] The interior adaptive reuse conversion was executed by an international collective of design studios that sought to complement the Neo-Baroque architectural fabric with contemporary Nordic design sensibilities.[8] London-based Universal Design Studio designed the 390 guestrooms, corridors, and lobbies, drawing color inspiration from 19th-century Danish painter Vilhelm Hammershøi, while interior design firm Goddard Littlefair (via its hospitality arm Epicurean) designed the food and beverage venues and conference areas.[9][10] Key historical elements—including vaulted ceilings, marble columns, restored window frames, and original wood paneling—were preserved and integrated into the public spaces.[8] Additional design contributors included Swedish architecture firm Krook & Tjäder, who designed a glass-domed courtyard roof, Danish fine jewelry brand Shamballa Jewels, and Danish architect Eva Harlou, who created the eco-conscious "Earth Suite".[7][9]
Art
The hotel houses a private contemporary art collection belonging to owner Petter Stordalen.[11] Notable pieces displayed in public spaces include a large floating head sculpture by Spanish artist Jaume Plensa suspended beneath the glass-domed atrium roof,[12] alongside curated works by Danish painter Per Kirkeby and Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson.[13][11]
