Villaination! is the fifth studio album by American rapper John Anthony, released on February 11, 2022, by Villainous Records. The album art and title features similar comparisons and inspiration to rapper Kurupt's 1998 debut album Kuruption!.[1] The album features guest appearances from Wu-Tang Clan member Bronze Nazareth, Yukmouth, J Mont, among others.
Background[edit]
On January 7, 2022, John Anthony released the album's first single "Whole New Level".[2]
The album consists of twenty-two songs with many artist features. The song "Mystery" features rapper Bronze Nazareth, who is a distant member of hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan. Another major feature is the song "Holy Grail", which features Yukmouth, who is one half of hip-hop duo Luniz.
The hip-hop album comprises both boom bap and trap music styles. The album's titled was enhanced towards John Anthony's fans, stating on the artwork cover: "The term "Villaination" emanates from the The Villainous Nation, or The Villainous Club. It essentially signifies ones devotion, or fandom, not only to John Anthony's music, but to ones mentality to always live life Villainous".[3]
The artwork heavily tributes "Kuruption!", the 1998 debut album of rapper Kurupt. [4]
Release and production[edit]
Villaination! was released on February 11, 2022. After the album released, three songs "One Love", "Villaination" and "Look At My Life" featuring J Mont, all received music videos shortly after.
The first music video was for "Villaination" and was shot by A Director Hitman, along with "Look At My Life". "One Love" music video was filmed in the city of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, which is John Anthony's hometown. [5]
The album was produced by various music producers such as Eric Yu, Robin Tabacca, CEDES, Anno Domini, A.E., Lewbi, Lil Xpert, Reasy Beats, DeDeusWTF, Valentine Beats, ChaseRanItUp, P90, Pendo46, Megatrong, DXOR, En1ight, Hrithik Beats and John Anthony.[6] The album's executive producer was Edward Johnson and John Anthony.
Accolades[edit]
The album compiled in over 10,000 worldwide streams its first two weeks, along with over 100 copies sold.
A little after eight months, on October 22, Villaination! received a commemorative gold record plaque for totaling over 100,000 worldwide streams and 250 sales.[7] This being the first album by John Anthony that has reached this accomplishment. John Anthony also earned his fist commemorative plaque the previous year for his 2021 album Words Are Weapons.[8]
