Vincenzo Troia (born August 21, 1980) is a computer security professional, hacking forensic investigator, and cybersecurity author. He owns and operates Night Lion Security, a cybersecurity services firm, and earned a PhD in Information Security and Assurance from Capella University for research investigating the perceived effectiveness of the CyberSecurity Framework among information security leaders.[1] He is credited with the discovery of several major data breaches including Exactis[2] and People Data Labs.[3][4]

In 2017, Troia was appointed to the Hacker Advisory Board of MGT Capital Investments, a cybersecurity holdings company led by John McAfee.[5]

Troia's recent work in cyber fraud investigations includes exposing the identities of hacking groups The Dark Overlord and ShinyHunters. These groups have been attributed to nearly 40% of all non-credit card-related data breaches between 2017 and 2020, essentially fueling an entire underground black-market of stolen user accounts.[6] Troia's research details an underground supply chain where video game accounts from popular games like Fortnite and Roblox are among the most valuable and sought after, accounting for a significant portion of the 700+ million dollars in annual black-market revenue generated by these underground markets and data brokers.[7][8]

Published works[edit]

Troia is the author of the book Hunting Cyber Criminals: A Hacker's Guide to Online Intelligence Gathering Tools and Techniques (ISBN 1119540925 Search this book on .), which provides scenarios from his investigation into The Dark Overlord hacking group, and ways to investigate cyber criminal using the Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) gathering tools and techniques. The book is published by Wiley book publishers.[9]
