Vipul Sharma (born 4 June 1975), is an Indian film director, screenwriter, and producer who predominantly works in Gujarati cinema. Cited by the media as one of Gujarat's influential filmmakers, Vipul Sharma is widely credited with revolutionizing the Gujarati film industry and altering the profile of Gujarati cinema. Although working in the mainstream medium, his films are noted for their technical finesse and craft. The Government of Gujarat honoured him with the Best Director For his first Gujarati feature film LOVE IS BLIND in the year 2007.

Vipul Sharma did show much interest towards films when he was young. Upon completing his Diploma in Dramatics, Degree n Dramatics and post-graduation in Development communication, he started his career as an artist, playwright and director while studying. He entered the film industry through the 2004 Gujarati  film Love is Blind.[1] The freshness and making of his first film established him as a leading filmmaker in Gujarati cinema. He followed that with the  Deshbook (2014), which is regarded as an experimental film based on Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s ideology.

Vipul Sharma is a well-known Gujarat dramatist and has done remarkable plays from 1995 to 2015. Such as ‘Family no-1’, ‘Chal re sajn kar le lagan’, ‘Hun j maro vidhata’, ‘No Exit’ and many more.

Vipul Sharma has also known as a Television personality. He has written and directed more than 12 TV shows with ETV Gujarati, Zee Tv Gujarati, Doordarshan, SAB TV. He has also written some episodes of the famous show Tarak Mehta ka Ooltah Chashmah(2009). At the same time, he is involved in making documentaries of development communication from the Government of Gujarat.

Early Life[edit]

During his schooling (1985-1990) while his friends were used watch commercial films Vipul used to watch art films every Sunday on Doordarshan. He is much more inspired by the famous TV show Malgudi Days. He watched almost all major films of Shyam Benegal, Givind Nihalani, Tapan Sinha, Basu Bhattacharya, Hrishikesh Mukharji, K.Balachander and many more legends. By the time when he was in college, he got to know about the director Maniratnam, and watched his film Roja, and became a fan of his work. Then he left his B.Sc, joined Diploma in Drama, and started his work for filmmaking.

Film Career[edit]

Mularaj Rajda, a prominent writer of Gujarati screen developed a script for a film and named Love is Blind. All agreed to produce the film but imposed a condition that it should be made to target the modern audience of Gujarat. As a debutant, Vipul Sharma wanted to ensure that the film's technical aspects are best and up to the mark. He persuaded Darshan Dave (Cinematographer of Bhav ni Bhavai, Muj Se Dosti Karoge, Papa kahete he, Mouthful of the sky) to do the cinematography as he found the latter of his work very impressive. He managed to get other crew members Ashok B. Remade (for editing), Mayur Vakani (for art direction) and Kardam Thaker (for music composer music), all leading craftsmen in their respective fields then. Also selected singers like Shaan, Shreya Ghoshal, Kunal Ganjawala, Sadhna Sargam, Rich Sharma for best melodies.

For the female lead, he cast Sonali Kulkarni [2]after watching his performance in Farhan Akhtar’s debut film Dil Chahta he and Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Mission Kashmir. Also selected Sudha Chandran for the strong character role.

The film explored the love story and the film achieved Vipul Sharma the Best Director Award from the Gujarat State Government for the year 2005.

The film was critically acclaimed for portraying urban Gujaratis in a "realistic" manner. The score by Kardam Thaker was appreciated and became popular upon release. The film elevated Vipul's status as a director and won the State Government Film Award for Best Feature Film in Gujarati. It also won a total of 11 awards in different categories such as Best Film, Best Director, Best Music, Best Cinematography, Best Screenplay, Best Dialogue, Best Playback singer male and female, Best Supporting Actors and Actress, and Best Film mixing.

Following the commercial successes, Vipul wrote and directed his second film Deshbook in 2014. The film deals with the ideology of the iron man of India, Shri. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Its screenplay and dialogue give him large critical acclaim but the movie couldn’t be released accept Ahmedabad and couldn’t work properly.

After his directorial venture, he also started writing for other directors. He wrote dialogue for Dhwani Gautam's ROM COM-Romance Complicated[3][4][5][6](2015-16), and Siddharth Trivedi’s Romeo and Radhika[7][8][9]in 2014. Dhwani Gautam repeated him as a dialogue writer for his next film Tuu to gayo[10] in 2016 and it became the biggest hit of this year, its catchy, witty humorous one-liners gave full credit to Vipul Sharma.

2017 gives him more credit as a writer, film Shubh Aarambh[11][12], which is based on Vipul Sharma’s story is appreciated by the entire Gujarat. Prominent filmmaker Sooraj Barjatya, and critic Komal Nahata admired the story of this film. It's starring Harsh Chhaya and Prachi Shah.
