Early Life[edit]

Lal was born in Madhuvani in the Rakiraki District and was educated at Madhuvani Indian School and Penang Sangam High School. He then studied Hindi and Journalism at the University of the South Pacific. He also has diplomas in Hindi from the Central Hindi Directorate, India, and Computer Science.

He began his career as a teacher, teaching at Penang Sangam High School for five years. He then moved into the media industry, working as a news reporter, news editor, and program director at FBC, CFL, and Fiji TV. He also hosted the TV program Kirtan Sangrah.[3] He also served as general secretary of the Shri Sanatan Dharm Pratinidhi Sabha Fiji, the largest organization of Hindus in Fiji.[4] He is also the National Secretary of the Hindi Parishad Fiji, which consists of all the major Hindu faith-based organizations in Fiji.

He was selected as a FijiFirst candidate at the 2018 Fijian general election,[5] but was not elected. He entered the Fijian Parliament for the first time in December 2020 following the resignation of Vijendra Prakash.[6][7] He was appointed to the Standing Committee on Public Accounts.[8]

He was again selected as a FijiFirst candidate in the 2022 election, but was unsuccessful, winning only 539 votes.[9] He re-entered parliament in February 2023 following the resignation of Rosy Akbar.[10][11]
