Virgin Music is a Japanese records label owned by Universal Music Group (UMG) and operates as a sub-label under Universal Music Japan (UMJ). It was one of the labels of EMI Music Japan (EMIJ) which was later absorbed into Universal Music Japan after the EMI was aquired by UMG in 2012.
Overview[edit]
Virgin Japan, originally established under the wholly-owned subsidiary of Virgin Records, was integrated into Toshiba EMI following EMI's acquisition of Virgin Records in the UK, and became a label of the company, in this case, "Virgin Japan" as a corporation was acquired by Pony Canyon, which was a joint venture company, and became Media Remoras (メディア・レモラス Media remorasu) (dissolved in 1997).
In addition, the catalog number of the Japanese editions of Virgin Records of Western music starts with "VJ", but in the case of this label, it started with "TO" before integration (in the case of CDs, it will be "TOCT-"). This "TO" is a remnant of Toshiba EMI (TOSHIBA EMI). Currently, it starts with "TY" [1], "UI", etc.
There used to be three labels in the Japanese music section: Virgin Domestic (two-part format), Virgin TOKYO, and Virgin DCT (Dreams Come True dedicated label). And it was operated for each section. Virgin DCT was discontinued with the transfer of Dreams Come True in 2002, and as of April 1, 2004, three other sections were absorbed into the current Virgin Music. After that, Reservoir Records was established, but in October 2007, it became affiliated with this label (substantically absorbent integration). In 2012, EMIJ's parent company, the British EMI Music division, was acquired by Universal Music Group, so EMIJ was dissolved on March 31, 2013. On April 1, the following year, it was consolidated in EMI Records Japan, the UMJ production department, and Virgin Music itself disappeared once.
On April 15, 2014, Universal Music's Japanese music labels EMI R and Delicious Deli Records merged to virtually revived Virgin Music (from June of the same year, all production notations on the package changed from EMI R and Delicious Deli Records to Virgin Music).
