Virupakshappa Gurappa Shivdare
Virupakshappa Gurappa Shivdare (August 17, 1926 – August 8, 2008) was an Indian politician and a freedom fighter. He was born into an agricultural family in a small village, Ingalagi, in the South Solapur Taluka of Solapur district. He represented the South Solapur constituency as M.L.A, in the Maharashtra state Legislative Assembly for three consecutive terms as a candidate from Indian National Congress. Although he belonged to the Lingayat community, he was a leader who connected to the society beyond caste creed and social status. Although not much educated formally, he was well-read nonetheless. He founded Dakshin Solapur Taluka Shikshan Mandal in Solapur, which is imparting education from kindergarten to doctoral level.

He joined the Quit India Movement in 1942, entered active politics and served as the President of Dakshin Solapur Taluka Congress Committee for more than three decades. He was nominated by the Maharashtra Government to serve as secretary of the "District Development Committee" from 1959 to 1961. As a result of Anna's efforts, a million farmer congregation (Shetakari Melava) was organized and addressed by the then Prime Minister of India, Shri. Jawaharlal Nehru and the then Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri. Yashwantrao Chavan. During his tenure as president of the Congress Dakshin Solapur Taluka, he worked on literacy improvement, khadi gramodyog, farmers' associations, and against untouchability. He served Maharashtra State Legislative Assembly as an elected “Member of Legislative Assembly” (MLA) from South Solapur for three consecutive terms during 1962-1967, 1967-1972. 1972-1976. Being a popular and powerful cooperative leader in Solapur district he was often quoted with the prestigious prefix of “Sahakar-Maharshi”.
