Viva Radio (Viva) was an eclectic, Brooklyn, New York-based Internet radio station. Music programming was drawn from a roster of contributors known for their passion and depth of music knowledge. Each contributor had their own profile with extensive playlist archives, and shows were available after their original time of airing. Viva offered a picture, bio and contact information for its contributors.

The station ran 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Viva was the official in-store music and audio network for American Apparel stores and may have played live in over 160 of its retail locations worldwide. The website for Viva Radio is no longer available.

Mission[edit]

Viva was known for the depth of its programming, because each DJ was hand selected for the strength of their musical selections. Shows covered genres like dance music, indie rock, pop, rap and jazz.

The station was founded in June 2006. It had 60,000 unique listeners a month. Viva was created in order to give DJs, musicians, art and fashion personalities a place to showcase their favorite music.

Its slogan was "Bringing radio back on track!"

Contributors would put together new shows for the station weekly. Viva had 57 contributors, many of them from Los Angeles and New York City. The site is currently unavailable.

Viva had a studio in Park Slope, Brooklyn for conducting live shows and interviews.

VivaLive[edit]

VivaLive was a series where the station would record and rebroadcast live music performances. The station would loosely edit the live material with interviews reflecting artists' moods and experiences. Each part of the series was one to two hours long and aired about two weeks after the recording date. Recordings included performances by: !!!, Battles, Bonde Do Role, Black Dice, Glass Candy, The Fucking Champs, The Rapture and Simian Mobile Disco.

In addition to regular programming, Viva invited contributors and others to come into the Brooklyn studio to record live broadcasts, known as Me + You sessions. Guests played music and discuss their selections. Me + You participants included: Amazing Baby, Suzanne Vega, Dandy Warhols, Dennis Coffey, Calvin Harris, Matthew Dear, Black Lips, Mike Bones, Christy and Emily, Andrew W.K., Jon Glaser, MGMT, Excepter, Dark Meat, The Teenagers, Tyvek, Dez Mona, King Khan, Jeffrey Jensen, Love as Laughter, Jennifer O'Connor, Growing, The Fiery Furnaces, and Tilly and the Wall.

Naked Fridays[edit]

One of Viva Radio's radio programs that featured weekly mixes from the newest up and coming DJs from North America. The inspiration for Naked Fridays came from the Midwest lunchtime and midnight hour DJ mixes on house, hip hop, and R&B stations like Detroit's WJLB, and Chuck Chillout's Saturday Nights on NYC's KISS 98.7 FM. These radio mixes have produced international club hits. Contributors included Joseph Colbourne, Justine D, and Tropical Jeremy.

77 Boadrum Online Companion[edit]

Viva hosted a site with exclusive video footage from the Boredoms 77 Boadrum drum event. On July 7, 2007, devoted participants and fans gathered at the Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park in Brooklyn's DUMBO neighborhood to experience an ensemble of 77 drummers performing as "one giant instrument" under the direction of Japanese music legends the Boredoms. The Viva site hosted video interviews with many of the drummers, as well as a rare interview with Boredoms leader Yamantaka Eye.
