Vivian Health, formerly known as NurseFly, Inc., is based in San Francisco, California, with an additional office in Denver, Colorado. The online healthcare-exclusive marketplace posts jobs in nursing and allied health for healthcare staffing agencies and healthcare systems across the United States. Job listings include staff positions, travel contracts, local contracts, per diem/PRN jobs and locum tenens roles in various disciplines and specialties. In July 2023, over 1 million clinicians were registered to use Vivian’s job search platform.[1] By July 2024, the site hit 2 million users.

Vivian Health is owned by IAC, Inc. (NASDAQ: IAC), an American holding company that owns brands in 100 countries.

History[edit]

NurseFly was founded in late 2017 by Parth Bhakta[2] and Eric Connor[3]. The duo initially created the company to provide an online jobs marketplace for travel nurses seeking short-term positions at facilities with staffing shortages or seasonal needs, connecting them with the appropriate staffing agency or health system.

In August 2019, IAC, Inc. acquired NurseFly for a reported $15 million.[4] NurseFly co-founders Bhakta and Conner continued to lead NurseFly post-acquisition as Chief Executive Officer and Chief Technology Officer, respectively.

During 2019, NurseFly added allied health roles, an expanded set of healthcare disciplines, to its job search platform.

Between May 2020 and May 2021, NurseFly grew to fill nearly 10% of all travel nursing positions across the United States.[5] After learning from health systems that filling permanent staff roles was often more challenging than filling travel positions, the company spent three months rebuilding its platform to serve a broader range of healthcare professionals and employers.

In May 2021, NurseFly rebranded to Vivian Health[6], also called Vivian, and expanded its services[7][8] after building a proprietary data set of healthcare industry information using the 1.7 million jobs it had previously run through its systems. Some news outlets began touting it as the LinkedIn for healthcare.[9]

In April 2022, Vivian Health received a $60 million equity investment led by Thoma Bravo LP,[10] an American private equity and growth capital firm. The funding round drew in other investors, including IAC and Collaborative Fund. Vivian Health earmarked the newly raised capital to speed up the company’s growth and expansion, with some reserved for future M&A activities.[11][12]

In late April 2022, Vivian reported facilitating 15% of travel nursing placements,[13] representing $1.5 billion in annualized labor spend. It further noted that more than 700,000 clinicians used its platform.[14]

In March 2023, Vivian Health had over 225 employer partners and more than one million healthcare professionals registered on its marketplace. At this point, it had facilitated more than 3 million job applications through its marketplace.[15]

Vivian’s employees have the option to work fully remote. As of March 29, 2023, the company had 124 full-time employees working across 22 states. Adding in part-time roles, the company had 128 employees across 23 states. However, it currently has payroll set up in 29 states.

In late 2023, Vivian introduced the Vivian AI Copilot[16] at the SIA conference, including early access for certain clients, to assist with staffing challenges.

Rebranding[edit]

NurseFly was originally launched strictly for travel nurses. During its rebranding to Vivian Health, the digital job marketplace[17] extended its reach to include job listings for permanent positions, per diem shifts and local openings[7]. The expansion also included adding all types of allied health jobs to its marketplace, employer reviews and a salary database to its website.

Along with a new name and logo, Vivian Health rolled out a new product experience.[5] Vivian.com went live on the web and via mobile applications on iOS and Android devices on May 4, 2021, with new tools and capabilities for clinicians to promote a smooth user experience,[18] including:

  • Job Matching with new machine-learning technology that analyzes profiles and job information to match healthcare professionals to job opportunities.
  • Pay Analysis Tools using Vivian’s proprietary pay database that provides detailed salary information across positions and locations.
  • Employer Reviews that provide details on healthcare employers, including employer responsiveness, work environments, benefits and other aspects.
  • Resume Builder that lets healthcare workers design and download a professional resume generated from their Vivian Universal Profile.

Healthcare employers, including hospitals, health systems and staffing agencies, gained access to recruiter templates, real-time messaging and AI-based matching to help them cut down on time-consuming tasks common in the healthcare recruiting industry.

Acquisitions[edit]

In September 2022, Vivian Health announced an agreement with Lume,[19] a banking platform for healthcare workers, allowing Vivian to leverage Lume’s technology to create new banking and financial services for the registered clinicians on its platform.

As part of the agreement, Lume co-founders Christopher Chang and Shantanu Joshi joined Vivian Health to lead product and engineering efforts to develop new financial products and value-added services that directly benefit healthcare professionals.
