Vladimir Borisovich Vinnitsky (Ukrainian: Володимир Борисович Вінницький, Volodymyr Borysovych Vinnytsky; Russian: Владимир Борисович Винницкий), born June 13, 1943 in Kyiv, Ukraine, is a Ukrainian scientist, oncologist. He is M.D., Ph.D., D.Sc., Professor of Oncology at R.E. Kavetsky Institute of Experimental Pathology, Oncology and Radiobiology (IEPOR) of Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences. He is the author of a new theory of cancer: The Oncogerminative Theory of Carcinogenesis (1,2).

Scientific career

Vladimir Vinnitsky received an M.D. degree in 1966 from Kyiv Medical Institute, his Ph.D. in Oncology in 1971 from the Institute of Experimental and Clinical Oncology in Kyiv, Ukraine and his Doctor of Medical Sciences (DSc) degree in Oncology in 1982 from the R.E. Kavetsky Institute of Experimental Pathology, Oncology and Radiobiology (IEPOR) of, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. He worked at the IEPOR from 1967 to 2003, becoming Head of the Department of the Mechanisms of Metastasis (1984-2003) and Deputy Director (1984 -1991) of the IEPOR. Since 2003 he is a Chief Scientific Consultant to the IEPOR.

Research

He is the author of a new theory of cancer: The Oncogerminative Theory of Carcinogenesis (1, 2), which postulates tumor development as a dynamic self-organizing process that mimics a self-organizing process of early embryo development. He considers cancer to be a phenomenon of developmental biology, which he has termed as a “desperate asexual self-cloning event”. His theory has explained a unified sequence of development of various types of cancer: from the formation of tumor-initiating cells to the development of a malignant tumor and metastases. He has discovered the functional links between hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and natural immunity to cancer and has elaborated the theory of tumor-associated immunosuppression caused by HPA axis dysfunction. He published the first reports concerning the ability to suppress or prevent development of experimental tumors by direct electrical stimulation of the hypothalamic structures, involved in the regulation of the immune response (3,4). He is the author of more than 180 scientific articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals in the field of tumor marker, carcinogenesis and neuroimmunology. He has been a member of the Advisory Board of the International Society for NeuroImmunoModulation (ISNIM) (1987- 2003) (5), member of the Advisory Board of the International Academy of Tumor Marker Oncology (IATMO) (1986-1992) (6). He has been an invited lecturer at numerous universities, including UCLA (1988), UCSD (1991), UTMB (1995), and has given many invited lectures at multiple International scientific meetings including Stromboli Conferences on Aging and Cancer (1987, 1993) (7). He has been Organizer, President and Chairman of the 7th International Conference on Human Tumor Markers: September 10 -14, 1990 - Kiev, Ukraine (8).
