Vladislav Apostol (died February 7, 2018) was a Russian–Moldovan national reported to have been associated with the Wagner Group, a private military company involved in conflicts including the Syrian civil war.
Background
According to investigative reporting, Apostol had previously participated in fighting in eastern Ukraine before deploying to Syria as part of Wagner Group operations.[1]
Alleged involvement in 2017 killing
In 2017, a video circulated online showing Russian-speaking men torturing and killing a Syrian detainee at an industrial site.[2] The footage depicts the victim being beaten, including with a sledgehammer, and later killed.
Investigations by Novaya Gazeta and other media outlets used open-source analysis, social media comparisons, and leaked data to identify individuals allegedly involved.[3] Apostol was named in some of these reports as a suspected participant.
No public criminal trial has confirmed the identities or legal responsibility of those involved.
Death
Apostol died on February 7, 2018, following a U.S. airstrike on pro-government and Wagner-linked forces near Deir ez-Zor, Syria.[4]
