Volcanica is a peer reviewed scientific journal that publishes articles on a rolling basis, comprising two issues per year. The journal publishes original research focused on volcanoes and volcanology, including volcanic products, eruptive behavior, volcanic hazards, societal impact of volcanoes, and pertinent research from other related disciplines. The journal is notable in that it operates a Diamond open access policy, such that article submission doesn’t entail payment of an article processing charge on the part of the authors, and articles are immediately available open access for readers, without an embargo or subscription fees. The costs associated with article processing are instead covered by Presses universitaires de Strasbourg (PUS), a French academic publishing house based in Strasbourg. The journal platform is based on Open Journal Systems open source software (itself developed by the Public Knowledge Project).

Volcanica's grassroots, diamond open access model has been cited as an inspiration for new and prospective open access initiatives across the Earth sciences[1], including seismology[2][3], sedimentology[4], and geochemistry[5].

Scope and history[edit]

Volcanica is a broad-scope open-access international journal promoting research into all aspects of volcanology, including physical phenomena and their impact on society, health, and the environment. An online-only journal, Volcanica was launched in 2017, publishing its first accepted research article in March 2018.

Thanks to financial backing from an institutional publishing press, the journal allows free open access to published content, whilst also removing publication fees. In practice, manuscript submission is completely free for authors, and accessing content is completely free for readers. Moreover, authors retain copyright to their work.

The first issue of Volcanica was completed in July 2018, and contained five original research articles prefaced by an editorial[6]. As of November 2022, Volcanica has published 87 articles over 10 issues. In 2021, Volcanica published a fully bilingual special issue in collaboration with the Latin American Association of Volcanology (ALVO) and all of the official volcano monitoring agencies in Latin America[7], described as a "Who's Who" of Latin American volcanic hazard monitoring[8].

Abstracting and indexing[edit]

This journal is abstracted and indexed by the following services:

Volcanica has been awarded the DOAJ Seal, a mark of approval awarded by the Directory of Open Access Journals to "journals that demonstrate best practice in open access publishing."

Editorial board and committee[edit]

Volcanica is comprised of a team of volunteers in various editorial, technical, and outreach roles. There are two Editors-in-Chief, who are part of an editorial committee of eight members, in turn elected from a larger pool of around forty editors.
